I didn&#8217;t know there was an alternate spelling for tyrant<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/university-scholar-wants-licensing-of-journalists-gov-agency-to-monitor-misinformation\/\">University scholar wants licensing of journalists, gov. agency to monitor \u2018misinformation.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What could go wrong?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A visiting McGill University scholar wants an \u201cInterpol-like agency\u201d to monitor the internet and the licensing of journalists by the government \u2014 all in the name of combating \u201cmisinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/tnc.news\/2024\/04\/05\/ctv-police-misinformation-online1\/\" rel=\"noopener\">True North<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>during a recent lecture Rapha\u00ebl Melan\u00e7on said Canada\u2019s Bill C-18, aka the \u201cOnline News Act,\u201d can only have a \u201climited impact\u201d on mis\/disinformation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is what we can do in Canada in our jurisdiction but there\u2019s also the fact that you have lies coming from abroad and our laws do not apply to what happens outside of our borders,\u201d Melan\u00e7on\u00a0<em>(pictured)\u00a0<\/em>said. \u201cLiberal democracies [need] to ensure the same regulations are applied elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melan\u00e7on, a consultant and journalist who\u2019s worked for the Quebec and Canadian federal government, said countries can create an intergovernmental agency whose job would be to make sure information on the \u201cinternet and social media is correct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melan\u00e7on also recommended the \u201cprofessionalization\u201d of journalism by requiring licenses for those in the profession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment in Canada anyone can pretend to be a journalist,\u201d he said. \u201cTo this day members of the press have no obligation whatsoever regarding what they write or say in media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>MORE:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/disinformation-expert-professor-u-s-needs-common-sense-speech-restrictions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Disinformation\u2019 expert professor: U.S. needs \u2018common sense\u2019 speech restrictions<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tnc.news\/2024\/04\/05\/ctv-police-misinformation-online1\/\" rel=\"noopener\">From the article<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Melan\u00e7on ] went on to say that specific outlets should be barred from newsgathering at government events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat to me is a problem.
