Campus Self-Defense Act to take effect July 1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On July 1, Senate Bill 10, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/code.wvlegislature.gov\/signed_bills\/2023\/2023-RS-SB10-SUB1%20ENR_signed.pdf\">W.Va. Campus Self-Defense Act<\/a>, will take effect in West Virginia. Passed by the West Virginia Legislature in 2023, the Campus Self-Defense Act allows a person to carry a concealed pistol or revolver on the grounds of an institution of higher education, with some exceptions, if that person has a current and valid license to carry a concealed deadly weapon.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvu.edu\/\">West Virginia University<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/safety.wvu.edu\/safety-on-campus\/campus-safety-steering-group\">Campus Safety Steering Group<\/a>\u00a0has been working for many months in coordination with several sub-groups, including one focused solely on what is commonly known as campus carry, on how the law will be implemented across the WVU System.<\/p>\n<p>These, in conjunction with signage, will assist in informing where licensed concealed pistol and revolvers are not allowed on the Morgantown, Keyser, Beckley and Health Sciences campuses.<\/p>\n<p>Facilities has started installing signs in areas specifically exempt from the law under\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wvu.edu\/finalized-bog-rules\/bog-finance-and-administration-rule-5-14-deadly-weapons-dangerous-objects-w-va-campus-self-defense-act\">BOG Finance and Administration Rule 5.14 \u2014 Deadly Weapons, Dangerous Objects and the W.Va. Campus Self-Defense Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, it is up to the concealed carry license holder to know the specifics of the law and BOG Rule and to follow the regulations while on campuses throughout the WVU System. Violations will be addressed on a case-by-case basis.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally,\u00a0<b>please review the\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/safety.wvu.edu\/campus-carry\/faq\"><b>FAQs<\/b><\/a><b>\u00a0for updated information<\/b>, including a section specifically for Health Sciences, a step-by-step\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/safety.wvu.edu\/campus-carry\/resources\/what-to-do-if-you-see-someone-on-campus-with-a-gun\">What To Do if You See Someone on Campus With a Gun<\/a>\u00a0guide and storage locker requests for qualifying students living in residence halls.<\/p>\n<p>Occupants of \u201csole occupancy\u201d offices wishing to request an approved sign for a prohibited area can do so by submitting a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/pages\/responsepage.aspx?id=GB5Tp10-RUGuTDNtMgyn5NodUmxJA6BCompwx0cRWuhUODA2NFBURUhIVlFYTEdVTktJQkFOVEtOUC4u\">signage request<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty members are encouraged to use the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facultysenate.wvu.edu\/files\/d\/a19e5ecd-867b-4bb3-bbd8-d71c73543c00\/campus-carry-syllabus-statement.pdf\">Faculty Senate-approved statement<\/a>\u00a0addressing concealed carry in their syllabi. It is available at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facultysenate.wvu.edu\/\">facultysenate.wvu.edu\/home<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The University wants everyone to feel safe on campus and works each day on measures to help ensure that. For example, the University Police Department offers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/police.wvu.edu\/campus-training\">active shooter, self-defense and verbal de-escalation training<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>W.Va.
