{"id":102960,"date":"2024-07-12T21:20:31","date_gmt":"2024-07-13T02:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=102960"},"modified":"2024-07-12T21:20:31","modified_gmt":"2024-07-13T02:20:31","slug":"102960","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=102960","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Missouri Sheriffs\u00a0 &#8211; as all Sheriffs do &#8211;\u00a0 still retain the power to deputize whoever they want, and in the past quite often commisioned &#8216;Special Deputies&#8217; with no law enforcement status or required duties, primarily as a way to legally sidestep the ban on concealed carry, that is, up until when wanna-be gun grabber John Danforth was Attorney General in the mid 70s, and ruled that reserve deputies had to serve on duty at least 24 hours per month. We then elected him to the Senate where as a mere one of a hundred politicians he was actually less able to bother the citizenry.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bearingarms.com\/camedwards\/2024\/07\/11\/nytimes-frets-over-long-island-executives-special-deputies-n1225570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYTimes Frets Over Long Island Executive&#8217;s &#8216;Special Deputies&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a regular reader here at Bearing Arms, you know that I&#8217;ve got my own concerns about Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/bearingarms.com\/camedwards\/2024\/03\/27\/new-york-politician-looking-for-gun-owners-to-become-special-deputy-sheriffs-n1224342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">special deputy sheriffs<\/a>&#8220;, but mine are substantially different than the anxieties of Long Island Democrats shared by the\u00a0<em>New York Times.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>In a piece headlined, &#8220;A Trump Ally Is Training 75 Armed Citizens. Is That a Militia?&#8221; reporter Corey Kilgannon\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/11\/nyregion\/bruce-blakeman-armed-citizens-long-island.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plays up the fearmongering<\/a>\u00a0by Democrats over Blakeman&#8217;s plans for a reserve deputy force that would be deployed during emergencies.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"isPasted\" class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>The leader of a New York City suburb is recruiting 75 armed citizens, many of them former police officers, for a force of \u201cspecial deputies\u201d to be activated whenever he chooses.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican who has allied himself with former President Donald J. Trump and thrust himself into the culture wars, posted a call in March for residents with gun permits and an interest in becoming \u201cprovisional emergency special deputy sheriffs.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>The posting called the initiative a strategy to assist in the \u201cprotection of human life and property during an emergency\u201d such as a hurricane or blackout \u2014 and perhaps, Mr. Blakeman later added, \u201ca riot.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>The new force has drawn vocal opposition in this well-to-do Long Island county, which is one of the country\u2019s safest, protected by one of the largest police departments. It has plunged Nassau into a national debate about authoritarianism in an election season that some see as a fork in the road for American democracy.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Whether Nassau County actually needs a reserve force of deputies is an open question, but these types of programs are hardly unusual. They can be found in New York City, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.; just to name a few deep-blue cities that have similar reserve or auxiliary officer programs in place. And despite Kilgannon&#8217;s contention that the reserve force in Nassau County will be under the sole supervision of Blakeman, who could call them out at his whim, the reserve force is run by Sheriff Anthony LaRocco. According to the sheriff, the &#8220;Provisional Emergency Special Deputy Sheriffs will have no police powers unless an emergency is declared by the County Executive and they are activated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite those guardrails, Long Island lefties are losing their minds over what they see as Blakeman&#8217;s &#8220;private militia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"isPasted\" class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Jay Jacobs, the Democratic Party chairman for both Nassau County and New York State, accused Mr. Blakeman of using such issues to distract voters from his lack of progress on cutting property taxes and fees and fixing the property assessment system.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cThis is all to solidify his extreme right-wing base,\u201d Mr. Jacobs said. \u201cInstead of solving the county\u2019s problems, he\u2019s appealing to the right wing by speaking the language they like: militia, guns, law and order.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cThere is no problem he is looking to solve,\u201d Mr. Jacobs added. \u201cDoes he think we\u2019re going to be invaded by Suffolk County?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Meh. If this is a play to gun owners, it&#8217;s not a very good one. I imagine most Second Amendment supporters in Nassau County would prefer to see Blakeman and the sheriff\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/gun-permit-application-nassau-county-fc3jtleq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">make it easier<\/a>\u00a0to apply for a concealed carry license, not establish a reserve force of auxiliary deputies.<\/p>\n<p>Jacobs&#8217; comments are nothing, however, compared to what Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, the Democratic minority leader of the Nassau County Legislature, has had to say about the reserve force.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"isPasted\" class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s fear-mongering, and it\u2019s very damaging to people,\u201d said Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, the Democratic minority leader of the County Legislature.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s the opposite way we want to be going, a private militia with guns,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to work on gun control, rather than promote them.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>She\u00a0<em>should\u00a0<\/em>be working to ensure that every Nassau County resident has access to their Second Amendment rights, but that&#8217;s clearly too much to ask from someone who blithely shares comparisons of the reserve force with Nazi stormtroopers.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"isPasted\" class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Ms. DeRiggi-Whitton said in an interview that she had heard from Jewish residents who likened Mr. Blakeman\u2019s initiative to the rise of Nazi forces under Hitler. One person referenced the Brownshirts, a paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party formed in the 1920s.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>When Ms. DeRiggi-Whitton told reporters this in April, Mr. Blakeman, who is Jewish, called the comparison offensive and demanded her resignation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>She&#8217;s still in office, and the sheriff&#8217;s department is still training those reserve deputies, so I guess neither DeRiggi-Whitton or Blakeman got what they wanted.<\/p>\n<p>Again, maybe this reserve force is completely unnecessary, but that doesn&#8217;t mean that the Nassau County Executive is creating his own private army of 75 gun owners.
