{"id":103410,"date":"2024-08-03T12:32:29","date_gmt":"2024-08-03T17:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=103410"},"modified":"2024-08-03T12:32:49","modified_gmt":"2024-08-03T17:32:49","slug":"103410","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=103410","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bearingarms.com\/tomknighton\/2024\/08\/03\/note-to-nra-this-isnt-how-you-get-that-homecoming-you-want-n1225824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Note to NRA: This Isn&#8217;t How You Get That &#8216;Homecoming&#8217; You Want<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A couple of weeks ago, the NRA&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bearingarms.com\/tomknighton\/2024\/07\/23\/nra-wants-homecoming-but-2a-advocates-need-a-better-reason-why-n1225696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Hamlin called for a &#8220;homecoming.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0He wanted gun rights advocates to return to the new and improved NRA. Wayne LaPierre is out and things are returning to normal there.<\/p>\n<p>I get where he&#8217;s coming from and while I believe that if the NRA disappeared tomorrow, someone would step in to fill the void, the truth of the matter is that it&#8217;ll take longer for that to happen than I&#8217;d like and during that time, our right to keep and bear arms could be severely damaged. So we need something that void now and rebuilding the NRA is probably much faster than hoping someone else steps in quickly.<\/p>\n<p>I want Hamlin to get that homecoming.<\/p>\n<p>However, if that&#8217;s the goal,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/redstate.com\/wardclark\/2024\/08\/02\/nra-steps-on-a-rake-endorses-alaska-democrat-mary-peltola-earns-f-from-gun-owners-n2177663\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this isn&#8217;t exactly a winning strategy.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>We love our guns here in the Great Land. Alaska is in the top five states with the highest per-capita gun ownership; as I&#8217;m fond of pointing out, up here in the valley, even the hippies have guns, and know how to use them. Most of us aren&#8217;t overly concerned about human predators, although that can happen; most Alaskans keep guns to put food on the table and to occasionally fend off a big hairy beast.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But we also know that the Second Amendment has nothing to do with hunting or fending off big toothy critters. Therefore it comes as something of a surprise to see the National Rifle Association endorsing Alaska&#8217;s Democrat at-large Representative Mary Peltola<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4806950-nra-rare-endorsement-democrat-peltola\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for reelection<\/a>. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">(Full disclosure: My wife and I are both Life Members of the NRA and have been since the mid-90s.)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Peltola is Alaska\u2019s sole representative and an advocate for the Second Amendment. On her<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/marypeltola.com\/freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/marypeltola.com\/freedom\/\">campaign website<\/a>, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">she said she owns 176 long guns and dares \u201csomeone to tread on Alaskan freedoms.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>In a statement to The Hill, she said she campaigned in 2022 on a \u201cpro-freedom platform\u201d and continues that to this day.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cGuns are an integral part of Alaska\u2019s culture and our subsistence lifestyles,\u201d Peltola said. \u201cAlaskan gun [owners] are the strongest proponents for responsible gun ownership. We pass down our knowledge and skills to our children.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Peltola argued that the endorsement may help the country understand Alaskan culture and see \u201cthe importance of the Second Amendment in communities.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Except, that&#8217;s not what Mary said only a couple of years ago. From the Great Land, Must Read Alaska&#8217;s Suzanne Downing<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mustreadalaska.com\/nra-gets-an-f-along-with-rep-mary-peltola\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">had this to say<\/a>:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Just two years ago, the NRA rated Peltola with a \u201cD.\u201d Now, an endorsement? What has changed? Even the Gun Owners of America has rated Peltola with an \u201cF.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Peltola wants gun control measures, such as universal background checks, waiting periods, and gun storage laws.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>According to\u00a0<em>The Washington Post\u00a0<\/em>in 2022, \u201cDuring her campaign, Peltola said she wants a national law protecting abortion rights and favors some gun-control measures, such as universal background checks.\u201d\u00a0(Azi\u00a0Paybarah, \u201cWho Is Mary Peltola, The First Alaska Native In Congress?\u201d)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>On a questionnaire for the\u00a0<em>Anchorage Daily News,\u00a0<\/em>Peltola supported universal background checks and waiting periods for gun purchases.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, this is awkward.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Had the NRA not graded her a &#8220;D&#8221; just a couple of years earlier, it would be easy to say they were unaware of her anti-gun tendencies. Instead, they clearly knew she wasn&#8217;t exactly a champion of the right to keep and bear arms. Someone at the organization did, and one would assume that if nothing else, records were kept.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And yet, here we are.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Folks, this isn&#8217;t how you get people to put their trust in your organization.<\/p>\n<p>While the corruption surrounding LaPierre was a big chunk of why many people left, a lot of others started leaving because they found the NRA to be too eager to compromise. I understand the reasoning behind some of those compromises&#8211;&#8220;we&#8217;re going to lose this fight, so let&#8217;s try to make it as mild as humanly possible&#8221; might not be popular, but I do understand where the sentiment comes from&#8211;but the truth is that many people weren&#8217;t happy about that.<\/p>\n<p>With Peltola getting an NRA endorsement while also supporting universal background checks, waiting periods, and mandatory storage laws, it sure looks like the best-case scenario is that the new NRA is just incompetent versus being outright hostile toward the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, supporting gun control advocates would probably keep it out of Letitia James&#8217;s crosshairs going forward, it&#8217;s not exactly encouraging anyone to renew their NRA membership, now is it?<\/p>\n<p>I happen to think that Hamlin is sincere and that this is just a misstep. However, if they want that homecoming, this cannot be the way the NRA does business going forward.
