Vance\u2019s remarks on the economy in Michigan that the Ohio senator would \u201cundoubtedly lie, gaslight, and try to run away from the truth.\u201d\u00a0One such lie, he cautioned, is that<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cVice President Harris wants to force every American to own an electric vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVice President Harris does not support an electric vehicle mandate,\u201d Moussa claimed, before citing several news stories that argued the Biden administration only incentivized, rather than mandated, electric vehicle production by car manufacturers. The administration spent billions to build just a handful of electric vehicle chargers and introduced tax credits for electric vehicle purchases. In addition, however, the Biden administration pushed through a new tailpipe emissions rule through the Environmental Protection Agency that would force car manufacturers to significantly scale back production of gas-powered cars. \u201cThe regulation would essentially require automakers to sell more electric vehicles and hybrids by gradually tightening limits on tailpipe pollution,\u201d the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/20\/climate\/biden-phase-out-gas-cars.html\">reported<\/a>\u00a0in March.<\/p>\n<p>Even more damningly, Harris also supported an electric vehicle mandate when she serves as the junior senator from California. In April 2019, months after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/01\/21\/677834764\/sen-kamala-harris-announces-2020-presidential-candidacy\">announcing<\/a> her bid to become the 2020 Democratic presidential nominee, Harris cosponsored the Zero-Emission Vehicles Act of 2019. The bill, which was introduced by Senator Jeff Merkley and Representative Mike Levin, presented \u201cbold plan for transitioning the United States to 100% zero-emission vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The original version of the Zero-Emission Vehicles Act of 2019 would require 50 percent of new passenger vehicle sales to be automobiles that use zero emissions \u2014 electric or hydrogen-powered cars and trucks. The bill would require all new car sales be zero emission vehicles by 2040, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/imo\/media\/doc\/MAZ19464.pdf\">text of the bill\u00a0<\/a>and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/senator-merkley-congressman-levin-introduce-major-legislation-to-transition-america-to-100-zero-emission-vehicles-2019\/\">press release<\/a>\u00a0from Senator Merkley\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation gave authority to the EPA administrator to issue an \u201cinjunction on the manufacture of any passenger vehicles other than zero-emission vehicles by a vehicle manufacturer\u201d\u00a0by 2040.<\/p>\n<p>Harris supported an even more aggressive version of the legislation that would ban non-zero-emission vehicles by 2035, according to an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20191203230607\/https:\/kamalaharris.org\/policies\/climate\/full-policy\/\">archived page<\/a>\u00a0of her 2020 campaign website\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/inside-kamala-harriss-plan-to-make-bidens-unpopular-ev-mandate-even-more-aggressive\/\">obtained<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0<em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Harris\u2019s campaign has also claimed that she no longer supports a fracking ban and other key policies of her 2020 Democratic primary campaign.
