He was 93.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"isPasted\" class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto \"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">J<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>ames Earl Jones<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the revered actor who voiced<\/span>\u00a0<em><a id=\"auto-tag_star-wars\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/star-wars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-tag=\"star-wars\">Star Wars<\/a><\/em>\u00a0villain <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Darth Vader<em>,\u00a0<\/em>starred in<\/span>\u00a0<em><a id=\"auto-tag_field-of-dreams\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/field-of-dreams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-tag=\"field-of-dreams\">Field of Dreams<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and many other films and Broadway shows and is an EGOT winner, died this morning at his home in\u00a0Dutchess County, NY. He was 93.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto \"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>His reps at Independent Artist Group confirmed the news to Deadline.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto \"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Widely regarded as among the world\u2019s great stage and screen actors Jones is one of the few entertainers to have won the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), though his Academy Award was Honorary. Jones has received two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Daytime Emmy, a spoken-word Grammy Award in 1977 and three Tony Awards.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>James Earl Jones&#8217; range was as great as his voice was deep and magnificent. He played such different roles as Thulsa Doom in the original film adaptation of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0082198\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conan the Barbarian<\/a>,&#8221; Admiral Greer in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0105112\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patriot Games<\/a>&#8221; and several other adaptations of Tom Clancy&#8217;s work, as well as lending his legendary voice to a variety of features from Disney&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0110357\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Lion King<\/a>&#8221; to narrations of dozens of documentaries and other productions.<\/p>\n<p>Jones&#8217; honors and awards were as varied as the roles he played.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"isPasted\" class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto \"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>He was nominated for a Lead Actor Oscar for his role in\u00a0<em>The Great White Hope<\/em>\u00a0(1971) and was given an honorary Oscar at the 2012 ceremony. An eight-time Emmy nominee, his two wins both came in 1991: Lead Actor in a Drama series for\u00a0<em>Gabriel\u2019s Fire<\/em>\u00a0and Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Special for\u00a0<em>Heat Wave.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto \"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Jones also was a 2002 Kennedy Center Honoree and received Lifetime Achievement Awards from SAG-AFTRA in 2009 and by the National Board of Review in 1995.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto \"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Also a commanding presence on the Broadway stage, Jones earned four competitive Tony Award nominations for Best Actor in a Play, winning twice for his performances as Jack Jefferson in\u00a0<em>The Great White Hope<\/em>\u00a0in 1969 and as Troy Maxson in August Wilson\u2019s\u00a0<em>Fences<\/em>\u00a0in 1987. He received a Special Tony Award at 2017 ceremony.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood is a bit messed up these days, but James Earl Jones was an example of what an entertainer could be: Talented, focused, and dedicated to his craft. The world of show business is now a poorer place for his passing.<\/p>\n<p>If to mark the event, you want to see one of Mr. Jones&#8217; lesser-known works that is nonetheless wonderful and touching, seek out the 1996 film &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0116275\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A Family Thing<\/a>,&#8221; in which Robert Duvall co-stars as James Earl Jones&#8217; brother. Yes, really.
