Where they were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{&quot;n&quot;:&quot;blueLinks&quot;}\">As a musician in the Navy band, Schab was starting a seemingly quiet day when the attack in 1941 began. He quickly sprung into action, feeding ammunition to the gunners.<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{&quot;n&quot;:&quot;blueLinks&quot;}\">All these years later, he\u2019s back in the islands to commemorate the solemn anniversary, and the lives of those lost.<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{&quot;n&quot;:&quot;blueLinks&quot;}\">\u201cI\u2019m one of the very few left \u2014 and they deserve to be recognized and honored,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{&quot;n&quot;:&quot;blueLinks&quot;}\">For many years, Ike\u2019s family said he didn\u2019t want to return to the islands because the memories of the attack were just too painful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"continue-read-break\" data-t=\"{&quot;n&quot;:&quot;blueLinks&quot;}\">\u201cIt was an embarrassment for a long time,\u201d Ike said about the attack. His son Karl Schab added, \u201cIn the time, it was kind of a shock the United States that we were attacked and so the embarrassment was real. And then when I was stationed here, I said, \u2018Hey dad, come out and visit.\u2019 He said, \u2018No I really don\u2019t have any desire to relive that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{&quot;n&quot;:&quot;blueLinks&quot;}\">However, several years ago during the 75th anniversary, he changed his mind after seeing how few survivors remained.<\/p>\n<div class=\"intra-article-module\" data-t=\"{&quot;n&quot;:&quot;intraArticle&quot;,&quot;t&quot;:13}\">\n<div class=\"articlePageIntraArticleFullWidth ad-slot-placeholder left-image-intra-ad\" data-ad-index=\"1\">\n<div class=\"intra-article-ad-full left-image-intra-ad\">\n<div class=\"left-image-intra-ad\">\u201dHe said, \u2018As long as I\u2019m able to make the trip, I want to make the trip for the people that can\u2019t make the trip,\u2019\u201d Karl said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-t=\"{&quot;n&quot;:&quot;blueLinks&quot;}\">He\u2019s since returned to Pearl Harbor annually. Joining him from Portland this year are 14 of his family members and caregivers.<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{&quot;n&quot;:&quot;blueLinks&quot;}\">\u201cIt\u2019s a real chicken-skin moment.
