Man shot, killed during attempted break-in; police say intruder\u2019s behavior was bizarre<\/a><\/p>\n

ENGLEWOOD \u2014 A man was shot and killed after reportedly trying to break into someone\u2019s home early Friday.<\/p>\n

As reported on News Center 7 at 6, the shooting happened around 2 a.m. in the 600 block of Overla Boulevard in Englewood.<\/p>\n

A couple heard someone trying to break in, they prepared to defend themselves and gunfire happened while one of them was calling 911.\u00a0A caller told dispatchers that her boyfriend heard someone trying to break in and he went to grab his gun.<\/p>\n

On the call, you hear a confrontation and gunshots.<\/p>\n

Englewood police crews pulled up during the call.\u00a0They found the alleged intruder on the ground in the home\u2019s side yard.\u00a0The police said the man who lived at the home thought the intruder had left and checked his backyard shed.\u00a0He then walked toward the street to see if his car had been broken into.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was confronted by the suspect. The suspect came toward him. He, in fear for his life, fired three shots from this firearm,\u201d Englewood Police Chief Corey Follick said.<\/p>\n

The man killed was identified as 43-year-old Matthew Culham.\u00a0Follick said his actions were unusual for a burglar.\u00a0\u201cMost burglars, if they determine the home is occupied, once they\u2019re detected they flee the area,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Follick said the evidence gathered at the scene did support the couple\u2019s version of what happened.\u00a0Police can\u2019t explain Culham\u2019s actions at this time.\u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s why we had to wait for toxicology reports to see if anything else is factored into that as well,\u201d Follick said.<\/p>\n

Englewood barely has one homicide a year over the last decade, making the shooting even more unusual.<\/p>\n
