{"id":108334,"date":"2025-03-13T18:46:28","date_gmt":"2025-03-13T23:46:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=108334"},"modified":"2025-03-13T18:48:08","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T23:48:08","slug":"108334","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=108334","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/redstate.com\/wardclark\/2025\/03\/13\/california-anti-self-defense-measure-withdrawn-assemblyman-yanks-his-own-bill-n2186634\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WINNING: CA Democrat Withdraws His Own Anti-Self Defense Bill in State Assembly<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a victory for common sense, human rights, and the Second Amendment, a California Democrat assemblyman, Rick Zbur, has withdrawn his own bill, which would have gutted legal protections for innocent citizens\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CaliforniaGlobe\/status\/1900281286796919123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who use force in self-defense<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">AB 1333 is Dead: Assemblyman Zbur Withdraws Bill Limiting Self-Defense.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018If the bill was supposed to stop vigilantes, then why did so many law enforcement officials denounce it?<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CaliforniaGlobe?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CaliforniaGlobe<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vixOKRoNTg\">https:\/\/t.co\/vixOKRoNTg<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ATZ03H9JJM\">pic.twitter.com\/ATZ03H9JJM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; California Globe (@CaliforniaGlobe) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CaliforniaGlobe\/status\/1900281286796919123?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 13, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The California Globe has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/californiaglobe.com\/fr\/ab-1333-is-dead-assemblyman-zbur-withdraws-bill-limiting-self-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more details<\/a>\u00a0on AB 1333:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Assemblyman Rick Zbur (D-Los Angeles) announced late on Wednesday that he would be withdrawing his new self-defense limitation bill following significant public backlash and confusing language in the bill.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB1333\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Assembly Bill 1333<\/a>, which was introduced last month, would have eliminated certain circumstances under which homicide is justifiable, including, among others, in defense of a habitation or property. The bill would have also additionally clarified circumstances in which homicide is not justifiable, including, among others, when a person uses more force than necessary to defend against a danger.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Zbur said that AB 1333 would simply close a \u201clegal loophole\u201d over public confrontations and then claiming self-defense. However, AB 1333 instead sparking public outrage. Many pointed out that the bill would severely limit self defense against crime and leave open questions into when homicide was and wasn\u2019t legal.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In non-political speech, this law could have implemented serious legal dangers, with one GOP assemblyman calling it a &#8220;complete assault on self defense.&#8221; Both Republicans and Democrats balked, forcing Zbur to withdraw the bill:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cThis bill is a complete assault on self defense!\u201d said Assemblyman Tom Lackey (R-Palmdale)\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/californiaglobe.com\/fr\/california-bill-restricts-self-defense-against-crime-ends-crime-stopping-protection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last month<\/a>. \u201cImagine this: A violent criminal breaks into your home, and YOU have to second-guess whether defending your family is \u2018justifiable.\u2019 The misguided energy behind this proposal is beyond comprehension.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Flooded with criticism from both Republicans and some Democrats, Zbur swiftly\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/californiaglobe.com\/fr\/california-bill-restricts-self-defense-against-crime-ends-crime-stopping-protection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responded<\/a>\u00a0on X, saying that he wanted to target vigilantes and that AB 1333 would be amended soon to clarify the bill language.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>As with so many poorly thought-out gun and self-defense laws, this proposal would never have any effect on criminals but would only serve to place innocent citizens in the position to choose between suffering a criminal attack or suffering legal hassles and possible jail time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, this bad idea died on the vine. Notice the unnecessary attack on Kyle Rittenhouse:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cAB 1333 was never intended to limit a crime victim\u2019s right to defend yourself, your family, or home,\u201d Zbur posted\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AsmRickZbur\/status\/1894490284526113043\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on X<\/a>. \u201cThe goal is to prevent wannabe vigilantes like Kyle Rittenhouse from provoking violence &amp; claiming self defense after the fact. We will amend the bill to make this crystal clear.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>However, this did little to stop the growing amount of criticism. By early March county sheriffs from across California and crime victim groups<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/californiaglobe.com\/fr\/more-sheriffs-oppose-california-bill-making-self-defense-illegal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0joined in<\/a>, furthering the backlash. While bill supporters continued to defend it, AB 1333 was seen by many as beyond repair. This led to Wednesday when Assemblyman Zbur officially pulled the bill, withdrawing it following committee placement and a final amendment.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I reported on this bill at its introduction in February:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><em>Previously on RedState:<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/redstate.com\/wardclark\/2025\/02\/25\/california-legislator-introduces-bill-to-gut-self-defense-protections-for-citizens-n2185993\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>California Legislator Introduces Bill to Gut Self-Defense Protections for Citizens<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>At that time, I wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>The citizens have the right to defend themselves, their families, their property, and their communities. That&#8217;s a fundamental human right. And, yes, we have the right, when confronted by armed goblins, to use whatever force is required to protect ourselves and our property. Any law, any regulation that deprives us of that right is constitutionally and morally illegitimate.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Guns are used many times a year in self defense; the number may well be in the millions. Other jurisdictions, as my colleague Rusty Weiss noted recently, actually encourage citizens to provide for their defense, as the police can&#8217;t be everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>For the time being, at least, AB 1333 is gone, but this won&#8217;t be the last time a California leftist politician tries something like this.
