Germany Is Revoking Gun Rights from AfD Supporters\u2014and It\u2019s a Warning Shot for the West<\/a><\/p>\n

In Germany, owning guns is a privilege that can be taken away\u2014not for breaking the law, but for holding the wrong political opinion.<\/p>\n

Members and supporters of the right-leaning\u00a0Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland<\/a>\u00a0(AfD) party are now facing mass gun license revocations. The reason? The German government has labeled the AfD a \u201cright-wing extremist\u201d group\u2014a political designation that suddenly makes its members \u201cunreliable\u201d under the country\u2019s gun laws. And just like that, firearms must be surrendered or destroyed.<\/p>\n

If that sounds outrageous, it should. But it\u2019s not surprising.<\/p>\n

Here in the U.S., we\u2019ve already seen our own political establishment flirt with these kinds of tactics. Remember when New York\u2019s then-Governor Andrew Cuomo said pro-gun conservatives \u201chave no place\u201d in his state? Or when San Francisco\u2019s Board of Supervisors labeled the NRA a \u201cdomestic terrorist organization\u201d? Label first. Punish later.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the playbook being used in Germany right now. And it\u2019s worth paying attention to.<\/p>\n

Government Labels a Popular Opposition Party \u201cExtremist\u201d\u2014Then Comes the Crackdown<\/h2>\n

In 2021, Germany\u2019s domestic intelligence agency, the\u00a0Bundesamt f\u00fcr Verfassungsschutz<\/em>\u00a0(BfV), designated the entire AfD as a \u201csuspected threat to democracy.\u201d That move allowed the government to surveil, wiretap, and investigate the party and its members.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n

Courts have now upheld revoking gun licenses from AfD members, based solely on their political affiliation. In one case, a couple in North Rhine-Westphalia lost legal ownership of over 200 firearms. They weren\u2019t criminals. They weren\u2019t accused of wrongdoing. They were just AfD members.<\/p>\n

Another court in Thuringia blocked a blanket gun ban for all AfD members\u2014but left the door wide open for revocations on a case-by-case basis.<\/p>\n

In Saxony-Anhalt, officials are reviewing the gun licenses of 109 AfD members. As of last fall, 72 had already been targeted for revocation, with the rest under active review. The justification? Supporting a party the state now claims is \u201cworking against the constitutional order.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the courts are backing it up. According to a March 2024 ruling, former or current AfD supporters \u201clack the reliability\u201d required to legally own firearms.<\/p>\n
