{"id":109533,"date":"2025-04-23T20:01:06","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T01:01:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=109533"},"modified":"2025-04-23T20:01:06","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T01:01:06","slug":"109533","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=109533","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegunmag.com\/idaho-panhandle-school-board-okays-armed-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Idaho Panhandle School Board Okays Armed Teachers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The St. Maries, Idaho School District, located in Benewah County at the confluence of the St. Joe and St. Maries rivers southeast of Coeur d\u2019Alene Lake, has okayed teachers to carry guns on campus and in classrooms following a 4-0 vote to finalize the policy.<\/p>\n<p>Under the policy described by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2025\/apr\/15\/st-maries-parents-wont-know-which-teachers-will-ha\/\">Spokane Spokesman-Review<\/a>, in order for a staff member to be approved to carry on campus, he\/she must have an Idaho enhanced concealed carry license, go through a background check and 40-hour firearms training course which includes de-escalation and threat assessment instruction, and they must be screened and interviewed by local law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>St. Maries is the largest city in Benewah County.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mynorthwest.com\/local\/idaho-guns-school-campus\/4076629\">MyNorthwest<\/a>\u00a0noted that School Board Chairman Seth Stoke said none of the volunteer teachers or staff who are armed will be identified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can assume that everybody is armed,\u201d he said. \u201cThe whole idea is not knowing who is carrying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plan is in reaction to a rise in school shootings over the past 25 years. MyNorthwest pointed to a report from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/153\/4\/e2023064311\/196816\/School-Shootings-in-the-United-States-1997-2022?autologincheck=redirected\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a>, which said \u201cthere were 1,453 school shootings from the 1997\u20131998 school year to the 2021\u20132022 school year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most recent five school years have had a substantially higher number of school shootings than the prior 20 years,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n<p>Firearms carried by staff must be personally owned, and either carried or placed in a district-approved lock box at all times.<\/p>\n<p>The Spokesman-Review noted another development in school security is also in the works. The school board approved a three-year agreement with Panacea NW Region Corporation, a school security consulting firm based in Hayden, which is north of Coeur d\u2019Alene. Panacea NW will conduct emergency response training with school district staff and parents.<\/p>\n<p>The Spokane newspaper said a majority of residents in the community support the armed teacher program, while school staff is \u201cabout evenly split.\u201d Some staff reportedly support having an armed school resource officer with the Sheriff\u2019s Department on campus instead.
