{"id":109905,"date":"2025-05-09T14:11:05","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T19:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=109905"},"modified":"2025-05-09T14:11:05","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T19:11:05","slug":"109905","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=109905","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Something for them to think about as they &#8216;weigh&#8217;: ACTA NON VERBA<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-05-09\/trump-doj-weighs-gun-rights-as-a-focus-for-civil-rights-division\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump\u2019s DOJ Weighs Gun Rights as a Focus for Civil Rights Division<\/a><\/p>\n<div>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/o\/bs5EV\/https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/4131761Z:US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Justice Department<\/a>\u2019s top civil rights official said the division is considering making gun rights a formal priority, in a significant shift from its traditional focus.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said in an interview with Bloomberg that the department is reviewing whether certain state and local gun control measures infringe on citizens\u2019 rights.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe Second Amendment is one of the constitutional rights we are committed to defending,\u201d Dhillon said. \u201cWe\u2019re adding that to our analysis where states are violating constitutional rights.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>She declined to name specific jurisdictions under review but added, \u201cI think it\u2019s all pretty obvious where people\u2019s rights are being violated.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Cities including New York have maintained some of the nation\u2019s strictest gun-permitting laws, despite a Supreme Court decision\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/o\/bs5EV\/https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-06-23\/supreme-court-voids-n-y-gun-limits-establishes-right-to-carry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">striking down<\/a>\u00a0the state\u2019s \u201cproper cause\u201d requirement in 2022. That rule required gun permit applicants to show special justification for self-protection, which the court ruled unconstitutional.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The consideration of gun rights as a new priority for the Civil Rights Division is already reflected in an investigation launched in March. The government is looking into the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department over delays in issuing concealed-carry permits. The US says the inquiry will examine whether the delays constitute a pattern of Second Amendment violations.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Sheriff\u2019s Department said in a statement in March that it is \u201ccommitted\u201d to processing the applications \u201cin compliance with state and local laws to promote responsible gun ownership.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Historically, the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division has prioritized voting rights enforcement, housing and employment discrimination cases and police oversight. Notable actions include consent decrees targeting major city police departments and enforcement of federal voting protections.
