The Second Amendment Holds More Weight Than \u2018Uncle Dick\u2019s Deer Stand\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n

In a Senate Judiciary Committee Oversight Hearing this week, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi faced questions regarding her leadership of the Justice Department.<\/p>\n

But at the hearing, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) used her time questioning the nation\u2019s top law enforcement official to repeat her canned comment about her \u2018Uncle Dick\u2019s deer stand\u2019 when reiterating her support for legislation that would infringe upon citizens\u2019 Second Amendment rights by banning\u00a0popularly-owned firearms<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Stop us if you\u2019ve\u00a0heard this one before<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Illogical Reasoning, Rinsed and Repeated<\/h4>\n

Opening her time on the microphone, Sen. Klobuchar set the scene for an attack on our right to keep and bear arms. Addressing AG Bondi, Sen. Klobuchar got to her point.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2018, after the Parkland shooting, you were attorney general and there was a bill called the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act and the bill banned bump stocks and enacted red flag laws and raised the minimum age to purchase a firearm in Florida from 18 to 21 and you actually defended the law in court from a challenge from the NRA and we know that I\u2019m in favor of an assault weapon ban. Period,\u201d\u00a0she said<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look at these bills, and I think \u2018Does this hurt my Uncle Dick and the deer stand?\u2019 \u2013 we have a proud tradition of hunting in Minnesota \u2013 I don\u2019t think they do,\u201d Sen. Klobuchar suggested.<\/p>\n

Sen. Klobuchar has referenced her Uncle Dick numerous times when discussing her belief that Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs) can and should be banned.<\/p>\n

Since she brought it up, though, NSSF views gun control bills through the lens and with the knowledge that our Founding Fathers\u00a0didn\u2019t add the Second Amendment to the Constitution in response to a rogue deer herd<\/strong>.<\/a>\u00a0They added it as a guarantee that law-abiding Americans had the Constitutional right and means to keep and bear arms to keep a new government in check.<\/p>\n

Mislabels and Misinformation<\/h4>\n

Another key point to address is the term \u2018assault rifle,\u2019 which has been attributed to Adolf Hitler after he referred to the MP 43 (Maschinenpistole) by the German word Sturmgewehr \u2013 \u201cassault rifle\u201d in English. That the firearm, which became known as the Sturmgewehr 44, features an intermediate cartridge, controllable automatic fire, and a higher rate of fire, is not an accurate comparison to the MSRs of today.<\/p>\n

Here in the United States, the term \u2018assault weapon\u2019 didn\u2019t even exist in the lexicon of firearms before 1989. In 1988, anti-gun activist Josh Sugarmann, who was the communications director for the National Coalition to Ban Handguns, recommended that gun-control groups use public ignorance and fear to ban everything they can stuff into the phrase \u201cassault weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sugarman\u00a0wrote<\/a><\/strong>, \u201cAssault weapons \u2026 are a new topic. The weapons\u2019 menacing looks, coupled with the public\u2019s confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons\u2014anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun\u2014can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons\u2026. Efforts to restrict assault weapons are more likely to succeed than those to restrict handguns.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In the past several years, though, Americans have purchased Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs) by the millions and are becoming more aware of the firearm\u2019s functionality and operation. They aren\u2019t buying the lies repeated by gun control groups and their elected allies who seek to ban the popular firearm.<\/p>\n

In fact, firearm industry data has shown over the past few years while law-abiding Americans purchased firearms at a blistering pace, the MSR was\u00a0a popular choice<\/a><\/strong>, including among first-time gun owners. Since 1990, there are more than\u00a030 million<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0MSRs in circulation today. That includes more than\u00a04.5 million<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in the last three years alone. That makes the MSR more popular and commonly-owned today than there are Ford F-150 pickup trucks on the road.<\/p>\n

I wonder if Uncle Dick drives an F-150?<\/p>\n

The Cold Hard Truth<\/h4>\n

Unfortunately for Sen. Klobuchar and her gun control allies, America has already experimented with a ban, and facts overwhelmingly\u00a0prove<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban did not reduce crime.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are just incredibly popular firearms\u2026 they are commonly owned, commonly used,\u201d\u00a0said political economist and assistant professor William English of Georgetown University\u2019s McDonough School of Business<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cAt the end of the day, it is a rifle that I think is very easy to shoot, it\u2019s very easy to control, not a lot of recoil.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, it\u2019s a good gun,\u201d English added, when speaking with Washington Examiner\u2019s Paul Bedard. \u201cAnd to see it become widely owned, I suppose, makes sense in that context.\u201d<\/p>\n
