Pentagon rolls out GenAI platform to all personnel, using Google\u2019s Gemini.<\/a><\/p>\n

Other \u201cfrontier AI capabilities\u201d will join Gemini on the new GenAi.mil platform, meant to make generative AI tools available to all three million military and civilian personnel, the Department of Defense announced.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

WASHINGTON \u2014 This morning the Defense Department announced the launch<\/a>\u00a0a new website, GenAi.mil, meant to bring generative AI tools to all\u00a0three million\u00a0<\/a>of its military, civil service, and contractor personnel.<\/figure>\n

\u201cThe future of American warfare is here, and it\u2019s spelled AI,\u201d Defense Secretary\u00a0Pete Hegseth<\/a>\u00a0exclaimed in a\u00a0video<\/a>\u00a0released on X.com. \u201cAt the click of a button, AI models on GenAI.mil can be utilized to conduct deep research, format documents, and even analyze video and imagery at unprecedented speed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first AI available on the site will be the government version of\u00a0Google Gemini<\/a>, which can handle highly sensitive but unclassified information (what the Pentagon calls\u00a0IL-5<\/a>\u00a0data). But the Pentagon\u2019s plan is to grow GenAi.mil to offer \u201cseveral frontier AI capabilities,\u201d the announcement said \u2014 and the Department\u2019s chief technology officer, under secretary for research and engineering\u00a0Emil Michael<\/a>, wants GenAI for classified data as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the first time ever, by the end of this week, three million employees, warfighters, contractors, are going to have AI on their desktop, every single one,\u201d Michael said at DefenseScoop\u2019s DefenseTalks<\/a> conference this morning. \u201c[We\u2019ll] start with three million people, start innovating, using building, asking more about what they can do, then bring those to the higher classification level, bringing in different capabilities.\u201d<\/div>\n

Michael,\u00a0a former Uber executive<\/a>\u00a0who recently took\u00a0over the Pentagon\u2019s formerly independent Chief Digital & AI Office<\/a>, downplayed the previous\u00a0administration\u2019s efforts to advance artificial intelligence<\/a>. \u201cFor the past five years, the Department has had very little to show in the way of AI,\u201d he told the conference.<\/p>\n

Michael had made a similar complaint on Saturday at the\u00a0Reagan National Defense Forum<\/a>, although he singled out fellow\u00a0panelist Adm. Sam Paparo<\/a>\u00a0and his Indo-Pacific Command as an pathfinder. \u201cFor a department of three million people, we\u2019re vastly under-utilizing AI relative to the general population,\u201d Michael said. \u201cAdmiral Paparo and his command is probably one of the premier users;\u00a0they\u2019ve adopted it faster<\/a>\u00a0than sort of any other component, because they\u2019ve seen the utility and they\u2019re most urgent about it, and so we work most closely with him, and then we take the learnings that he\u2019s developing and bring it to other places.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael emphasized in both appearances that he wants to apply AI not just to Pentagon business processes \u2014 which have a lot in common with the private-sector functions that commercial GenAI is trying to take on \u2014 but also for intelligence analysis and even \u201cwarfighting\u201d functions like logistics planning and combat simulations.<\/p>\n
