{"id":113999,"date":"2025-12-18T19:51:24","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T01:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=113999"},"modified":"2025-12-18T19:51:24","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T01:51:24","slug":"113999","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=113999","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/usvi-us-government-trump-second-amendment-guns-45189a8a28da66b1307f4da4493d2270\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US government sues US Virgin Islands and accuses officials of violating the Second Amendment<\/a><\/p>\n<p>SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) \u2014 A Second Amendment clash has erupted between the federal government and the\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\">U.S. Virgin Islands<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. government sued the U.S. territory, its police department and Police Commissioner Mario Brooks on Tuesday, accusing them of obstructing and systematically denying American citizens\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ap.org\/news-highlights\/spotlights\/2025\/supreme-court-rejects-2-gun-rights-cases-but-assault-weapons-ban-issue-may-be-back-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">the right to possess and carry guns<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Virgin Islands requires that applicants demonstrate \u201cgood reason to fear death or great injury to his person or property,\u201d and to have \u201ctwo credible persons\u201d to vouch for their need of a firearm. Local law also requires that someone have \u201cgood moral character\u201d to obtain a gun permit, which is valid for up to three years and applies to a single weapon.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit states that no specific standard has been set or defined for the requirement of character. It also claims that the defendants \u201cregularly\u201d refuse to issue permits to those who by law are \u201cdeemed to be an improper person\u201d by the territory\u2019s police commissioner.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit states that those in the U.S. territory also must \u201csubmit to intrusive and warrantless home searches\u201d as one condition to obtain a gun permit.
