The scientists analyzed several elements of the participants’ health, including various compounds that circulated in their blood, chemical changes in their DNA that suggested their pace of aging, and the length of their telomeres, which are protective structures at the end of chromosomes. (Shorter telomere lengths are usually linked with faster biological aging.)

After analyzing the data, the researchers found that people with higher levels of theobromine (again, a compound found in dark chocolate) in their blood had a biological age that was lower than their chronological age. In other words, these aging markers suggested participants were biologically younger than their actual age.

Why might theobromine have this effect?

Theobromine has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, says Jessica Cording, RD, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers. “Part of how it may support healthy aging and a younger biological age is by helping improve blood vessel function, circulation, and cell signaling, which all play a role in how tissues age over time,” she says.

Dark chocolate may have more going for it beyond theobromine. “Cocoa contains a broad mix of polyphenols, especially flavanols, that are more strongly linked to cardiometabolic benefits,” says Leigh Frame, PhD, executive director of the Office of Integrative Medicine and Health at George Washington University.

What’s the takeaway?

This may seem to suggest you should up your dark chocolate intake, but experts say we’re not quite there yet.
