Neighbors stunned after burglary suspect was shot by homeowner in New Castle<\/a><\/p>\n

NEW CASTLE, Pa. \u2014 \u201cIt\u2019s just crazy to know that that was just right next door.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how one neighbor on South Jefferson Street in New Castle was feeling Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Early Monday morning, police said a neighbor on her street\u00a0shot a man in the leg after they said the man broke into the home.<\/a><\/p>\n

The neighbor didn\u2019t want to be on camera, but said her street is always quiet.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been here for four years, and this is a very quiet street,\u201d she told Channel 11\u2019s Andrew Havranek. \u201cThe kids go out and play every day, I mean, they\u2019re always nonstop running around outside. It\u2019s very quiet, nobody bothers you, I mean, the kids go to church right up the street, so that was just very alarming when I heard that. It was just like…Wow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lt. Steven Brooks with the New Castle Police told Channel 11 the suspect is still in a Youngstown hospital and might be for some time. Charges have not been filed and he said the investigation is still ongoing.<\/p>\n

Brooks said the man and the homeowner did not know each other. Right now, police do not expect charges to be filed against the homeowner.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so thankful he was able to protect his family,\u201d the neighbor said. \u201cI mean, luckily, he had that on him and he was able to do that. Sorry, it had to go to those lengths, but luckily he was there at that time to make sure his family was safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

That neighbor said she has cameras, but they didn\u2019t catch anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cI definitely think I\u2019ll be way more alert, definitely on high alert as of right now, just until everything\u2019s under wraps and they figure out why they did it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
