VA Ground Zero on Guns: DOJ Legal Action Threat<\/a><\/p>\n

In office only four months, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has found herself in the middle of a gun rights battleground, and the fault lies squarely in her lap and with her Democrat colleagues in the legislature for passing a slew of gun control bills, including one which brought a promise of federal legal action:\u00a0Senate Bill 749<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Spanberger faces a deadline of 11:59 p.m. tonight\u2014one minute before Midnight\u2014to either sign or veto the bill.\u00a0A third option, as noted by WVEC News<\/a>, would let the bills become law without her signature.<\/p>\n

In a sharply-worded letter to Spanberger, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon at the DOJ\u2019s Civil Rights Division, which includes the newly-created Second Amendment section, Spanberger was warned the DOJ \u201cwill commence litigation in the event the Commonwealth of Virginia enacts certain bills that unconstitutionally limit law-abiding Americans\u2019 individual right to bear arms.\u201d The letter specifically mentioned SB 749, which would \u201cunconstitutionally\u201d restrict the manufacture, purchase or sale of AR-15 rifles \u201cand other semi-automatic firearms in common use.\u201d<\/p>\n

This was no idle threat. Dhillon\u2019s Civil Rights Division has already taken legal action against the Virgin Island police and the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department over delays in approving gun permit applications.<\/p>\n

Dhillon\u2019s letter, which also went to Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones and Matt McGuire, counsel to the governor, has brought cheers from embattled gun owners in other states.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Washington Examiner<\/a>\u00a0quoted attorney William Kirk, president of Washington Gun Rights, who declared, \u201cThis is a big deal. For the first time in the history of the United States Department of Justice, you now have them stepping in preemptively before a bill actually becomes law and warning to a governor that \u2018Hey, you may be going a bridge too far here,\u2019 and then also being willing to back it up with litigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a video report on YouTube, Kirk observed that the battle over semi-auto bans \u201cis clearly heating up.\u201d<\/p>\n
