{"id":117203,"date":"2026-06-08T02:26:51","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T07:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=117203"},"modified":"2026-06-08T02:26:51","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T07:26:51","slug":"117203","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=117203","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2026-06-ai-universal-vaccine-humans-uk.html\">First AI-designed \u2018universal vaccine\u2019 tested in humans: UK researchers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A vaccine targeting a broad range of viruses that was designed using artificial intelligence had a &#8220;modest&#8221; effect on immune systems in a small, early trial, according to a new study.<\/p>\n<p>The trial marks the first time a vaccine whose active ingredient was entirely designed by AI has been tested in humans, researchers at the University of Cambridge in the U.K. said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The experimental jab is intended to be a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2022-04-quest-universal-coronavirus-vaccine.html?utm_source=embeddings&amp;utm_medium=related&amp;utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">universal vaccine<\/a>&#8221; that protects people against a range of viruses that have previously sparked deadly outbreaks, including SARS, MERS and COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers expressed hope that this type of vaccine could one day help fend off future pandemics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve converted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2024-09-scientists-ai-protein-hundreds-viruses.html?utm_source=embeddings&amp;utm_medium=related&amp;utm_campaign=internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener related\">vaccine development<\/a>\u00a0from being reactive to being future-proof,&#8221; Cambridge researcher and study co-author Jonathan Heeney said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Currently, vaccines for viruses such as the flu and COVID-19 have to be regularly updated to target the latest strains.<\/p>\n<p>But the new vaccine aims to produce an immune response that will protect against many pathogens\u2014including some circulating among wild animals that might jump into humans in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It means we can escape the constant cycle of chasing the virus variants circulating in humans and updating the vaccines to try to catch up, like a dog chasing its tail,&#8221; Heeney said.<\/p>\n<p>To design the vaccine&#8217;s active component, called the antigen, the researchers used a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2022-04-machine-learning-distinguish-antibody.html?utm_source=embeddings&amp;utm_medium=related&amp;utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">machine learning algorithm<\/a>\u00a0trained on genetic data for sarbecoviruses recorded around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 40 people participated in the trial between late 2021 and 2023. In the study, the researchers acknowledged the lingering COVID-19 pandemic complicated the results.<\/p>\n<p>It was a Phase 1 trial, which tests whether something is safe and well tolerated and is not intended to fully measure how effective it is.<\/p>\n<p>No serious side effects were recorded.<\/p>\n<p>However, the vaccine had only a &#8220;modest&#8221; impact on the participants&#8217; immune systems, according to the study published in the\u00a0<i>Journal of Infection<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Data collected during the trial does &#8220;not support a robust vaccine-induced increase in antibody responses beyond pre-existing levels,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>A Phase 2 trial involving more people will next find out more about how protective the vaccine could be.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First AI-designed \u2018universal vaccine\u2019 tested in humans: UK researchers.
