Justice Department investigates College of William & Mary over alleged \u2018race-based\u2019 scholarships.<\/a><\/p>\n

The College of William & Mary is under federal investigation this week over a series of scholarships and student programs that the U.S. Department of Justice says may be racially discriminatory.<\/p>\n

Announced Monday, the investigation focuses, in part, on the Virginia public college\u2019s \u201cW&M Scholars\u201d program, \u201cwhich grants scholarships covering the \u2018full cost of in-state tuition and fees\u2019 to \u2018academically distinguished students,\u2019\u201d the\u00a0Washington Examiner<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Students who express an \u201cinterest in diverse people and perspectives\u201d receive \u201ctop consideration\u201d for the first-year scholarship, according to a department\u00a0news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The department is investigating whether these and other scholarships and programs \u201cinclude racial criteria that violate Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProviding any educational benefits, including recruitment, scholarships, and support services, based on race violates the civil rights of all Americans,\u201d the department stated in its letter to the college.<\/p>\n

Another area of the investigation is the Holmes Scholars program for doctoral students. It offers mentorship, professional development, and career resources to \u201cfuture education leaders of color,\u201d according to the news release.<\/p>\n

The investigation includes several other programs as well, the\u00a0Examiner<\/em>\u00a0reports:<\/em><\/p>\n

Other programs at the College of William and Mary also raised concerns for the DOJ including the Martha L. Muguira Fellowship which gave \u201cpreference\u201d to Latino and Hispanic women, the Lemon Legal Scholars Program which allegedly was \u201cexclusively earmarked for graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and the \u201cReaching Back Scholarship\u201d which gave a \u201cpreference\u201d to applicants from HBCU schools as well as those \u201cwho contribute to the diversity\u201d of W&M Law.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cAwarding scholarships or offering coveted opportunities to students based on the color of their skin is illegal and offends the guarantees of our color-blind Constitution<\/em>,\u201d Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon stated in the news release.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

The department also stated that although the programs are under investigation, it \u201chas not reached any conclusions about the subject matter of the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The college media relations office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from\u00a0The College Fix<\/em>, asking for its response to the investigation.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/article>\n
