Scientists Have Never Seen This Before.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In November 2025, Earth was buffeted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/3-giant-solar-outbursts-explode-towards-earth-prompting-aurora-forecast-across-us\">several massive eruptions<\/a>\u00a0of solar material that slammed into the magnetosphere.<\/p>\n<p>For many, the result was wonder. Much of the world watched in awe as a solar superstorm lit up Earth&#8217;s skies with dazzling auroras to rare low latitudes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-1 Purch_Y_C_0_1-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_1\" class=\"ad-slot priad-1 ad-slot--content-1 Purch_Y_C_0_1\">The sword, however, was double-edged. The same storm also wrought havoc on the technology we rely on here on the ground.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-2 Purch_Y_C_0_2-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_2\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-2 Purch_Y_C_0_2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>And now, scientists led by space physicist Endawoke Yizengaw of The Aerospace Corporation in the US have discovered that the disruption was stranger \u2013 and more widespread \u2013 than anyone realized.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-3 Purch_Y_C_0_3-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_3\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-3 Purch_Y_C_0_3\">In a new analysis of data collected during the storm, the researchers found widespread, coast-to-coast disturbances in the atmosphere across the continental US \u2013 a phenomenon that has never been seen before on this scale.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-4 Purch_Y_C_0_4-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_4\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-4 Purch_Y_C_0_4\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"bordeaux-slot_static_4-hook_0\" class=\"bordeaux-slot\">That may not seem like much, but the effects of this would have been profound \u2013 throwing GPS off by more than 10 meters (33 feet) in some places. Solar flares, which unleash powerful bursts of X-rays and ultraviolet radiation, can slam into Earth&#8217;s upper atmosphere, temporarily disrupting high-frequency radio communications.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-6 Purch_Y_C_0_6-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_6\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-6 Purch_Y_C_0_6\"><a class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/geomagnetic-storms\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-linkid=\"73062\" data-postid=\"216651\">Solar storms<\/a>\u00a0are a bigger problem. A coronal mass ejection belches out a cloud of high-speed charged electrons and protons across the Solar System; when it slams into Earth&#8217;s magnetosphere, it can generate electrical currents that disrupt power grids, change the shape of our atmosphere, and interact with atmospheric particles to generate the auroral glow.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-7 Purch_Y_C_0_7-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_7\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-7 Purch_Y_C_0_7\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The effect Yizengaw and his colleagues investigated is produced in a similar way. During a\u00a0<a class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/geomagnetic-storms\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-linkid=\"73062\" data-postid=\"216651\">geomagnetic storm<\/a>, energetic particles can rain down into the ionosphere, a region GPS signals have to travel through.<\/p>\n<p>This mixing and roiling can create density fluctuations in the upper atmosphere. Think of an antique window pane, where the glass is unevenly distributed. Light traveling through that glass can distort and magnify the image it carries, so you see a skewed representation of the world outside.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-9 Purch_Y_C_0_9-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_9\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-9 Purch_Y_C_0_9\">Similarly, radio signals traveling through the lumpy ionosphere can become distorted and diffracted, causing their strength to fluctuate rapidly by the time they reach a ground receiver. This effect is known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sws.bom.gov.au\/Satellite\/6\/3\">amplitude scintillation<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-10 Purch_Y_C_0_10-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_10\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-10 Purch_Y_C_0_10\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ionospheric scintillation isn&#8217;t unusual, particularly towards the poles and around the equator. The mid-latitudes, however, are generally considered relatively calm and safe when it comes to this particular space-weather hazard.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-11 Purch_Y_C_0_11-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_11\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-11 Purch_Y_C_0_11\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The November 2025 superstorm said PSYCH.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-12 Purch_Y_C_0_12-container\">\n<div id=\"bordeaux-slot_static_4-hook_2\" class=\"bordeaux-slot\">As the storm intensified, the auroral oval expanded towards the equator, bringing the atmospheric chicanery usually associated with higher latitudes along for the ride.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-216657\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2026\/08\/mosaic.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2026\/08\/mosaic.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2026\/08\/mosaic-600x395.jpg 600w\" alt=\"A Solar Storm Caused GPS Chaos Across The US. (<a href=\"https:\/\/svs.gsfc.nasa.gov\/31374\">NASA<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yizengaw and his colleagues pieced together what happened using observations from multiple instruments across North America, including aurora cameras and a network of ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-13 Purch_Y_C_0_13-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_13\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-13 Purch_Y_C_0_13\">They saw a huge band of enhanced electron density stretching east to west across the ionosphere. Along its edge, the electron density changed sharply, creating conditions perfect for the formation of smaller-scale irregularities.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-14 Purch_Y_C_0_14-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_14\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-14 Purch_Y_C_0_14\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>And those irregularities were\u00a0<em>everywhere<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-15 Purch_Y_C_0_15-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_15\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-15 Purch_Y_C_0_15\">Strong amplitude scintillation appeared across a vast swathe of the continental US, from roughly 80 to 120 degrees west longitude.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-15 Purch_Y_C_0_15\">Other measurements showed the disturbance extended even farther, producing a strip of enhanced electron density that reached almost from the West Coast to the East Coast.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-216661\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2026\/08\/storm.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2026\/08\/storm.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2026\/08\/storm-600x598.jpg 600w\" alt=\"A Solar Storm Caused GPS Chaos Across The US. The researchers saw that, as the aurora brightened, electron density and irregularities intensified. At the same time, satellite signals began to scintillate, and GPS accuracy deteriorated.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-17 Purch_Y_C_0_17-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_17\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-17 Purch_Y_C_0_17\">Amplitude scintillation has been detected at mid-latitudes before, but only in limited observations, mostly at individual locations. Strong amplitude scintillation spanning such a wide range of longitudes has never been seen before, the researchers say.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-18 Purch_Y_C_0_18-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_18\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-18 Purch_Y_C_0_18\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In some regions, the resulting horizontal positioning errors exceeded 10 meters. Even an error of just one or two meters can spell serious trouble for technologies that depend on precision positioning, including autonomous vehicles and agricultural machinery.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-19 Purch_Y_C_0_19-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_19\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-19 Purch_Y_C_0_19\">Indeed, the <a class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/geomagnetic-storms\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-linkid=\"73062\" data-postid=\"216651\">solar storm<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-solar-storm-was-so-intense-we-felt-it-even-at-the-bottom-of-the-ocean\">May 2024<\/a>\u00a0is estimated to have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmprogress.com\/planting\/this-spring-s-solar-storm-could-cost-american-farms-500-million\">cost the US agricultural industry $500 million<\/a> due to disruptions in precision navigation.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-19 Purch_Y_C_0_19\">The November 2025 superstorm is unlikely to have cost anywhere near the same amount, which really highlights the sheer dumb luck of the draw. The 2024 storm happened during the farming season; the 2025 one did not.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-19 Purch_Y_C_0_19\">Together, however, the two events indicate how vulnerable certain industries can be to the vagaries of the Sun at the peak of its 11-year activity cycle.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-19 Purch_Y_C_0_19\">But if scientists can better understand and predict how extreme solar activity affects the ionosphere, we may be better prepared to mitigate the disruption when the next big storm arrives.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-23 Purch_Y_C_0_23-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_23\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-23 Purch_Y_C_0_23\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;If the November superstorm onset had occurred during farming season in the American sector, it could have led to significant losses for the American farming and transportation industries,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2026GL124645\">they write in their paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hence, understanding the storm time high\u2010 and mid\u2010latitude irregularities \u2013 and characterizing their impact on radio-frequency applications \u2013 requires knowledge of physical processes that control and describe the dynamics of auroral features, such as energy flux, expansion velocity, and precipitation scale sizes present in the auroral arc, all of which contribute to generating density irregularities that can cause scintillation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The analysis has been published in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2026GL124645\"><em>Geophysical Research Letters<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember the 2003 movie The Core?
