The latest to try to take down the movement are the editors of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkdispatch.com\/story\/opinion\/editorials\/2020\/02\/17\/editorial-no-need-gun-sanctuaries-pa\/4780674002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">York Dispatch<\/a>, who seem awfully upset about something they say is meaningless and purely symbolic.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p-text\">in yet another example of the privileged majority feigning minority victimhood, gun owners in rural communities nationwide are buying into the so-called \u201cSecond Amendment Sanctuary\u201d movement. This despite the fact that:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u2022 There are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2018\/06\/19\/there-are-more-guns-than-people-in-the-united-states-according-to-a-new-study-of-global-firearm-ownership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">more guns than people<\/a>\u00a0in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u2022 More than 45% of the world\u2019s civilian firearms are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smallarmssurvey.org\/fileadmin\/docs\/T-Briefing-Papers\/SAS-BP-Civilian-Firearms-Numbers.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">owned by Americans.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u2022 Even as 2019 saw a record number of mass shootings \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/mass-shootings-2019-more-than-days-365\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">more than 400<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 Congress continues to ignore the issue of gun safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u2022 The most recent substantial federal law regarding firearms \u2014 signed by President George W. Bush in 2005 \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lawcenter.giffords.org\/gun-laws\/policy-areas\/other-laws-policies\/gun-industry-immunity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">protected gun manufacturers<\/a>\u00a0from being sued by victims of gun violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Still, just the suggestion of something as mildly inconvenient \u2014 and widely popular \u2014 as, say, universal background checks for gun purchases elicits howls of opposition and, now, arguments for special protections for gun owners.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Actually, my main argument against universal background checks isn\u2019t that they\u2019re unconstitutional, it\u2019s that they\u2019re\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bearingarms.com\/tom-k\/2019\/01\/10\/even-vox-concedes-universal-background-checks-dont-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">completely ineffective<\/a>\u00a0at reducing violent crime or even increasing the number of background checks performed. In order to even attempt to be effective, universal background check laws\u00a0 need a gun registry, and that\u2019s where the constitutionality of the law comes in to play for me. I live in a state where anti-gun lawmakers just tried to turn me into a felon for keeping my AR-15, and then told me I\u2019d be allowed to keep it as long as I registered it with the state police. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s crazy to believe that these same lawmakers would love to use a list of gun owners to eventually confiscate their firearms, or at least declare them felons for continuing to own them.<\/p>\n<div id=\"piano_article_inline_container\" class=\"thm-piano-mop piano-placeholder-element\"><\/div>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Dispatch<\/em>\u2018s editorial board is really steamed that West Mannheim Township, Pennsylvania will be considering a Second Amendment Sanctuary ordinance on Tuesday that states no town funds will be used to \u201cinterfere with a gun owner\u2019s rights\u201d (in the words of a\u00a0<em>Dispatch\u00a0<\/em>reporter).
