Rhode Island Gun Control Bills Stall over Coronavirus Concerns<\/a><\/p>\n

And another one for ‘every cloud has a silver lining’. Not that it’s going to totally stop them.<\/p>\n

Wednesday gun control bill hearings for the Rhode Island House Judiciary Committee were cancelled over concerns that a \u201clarge crowd\u201d of hearing attendees could contribute to the spread of the Chinese coronavirus.<\/p>\n

WPRI reports that Rhode Island\u2019s state\u2019s health director, Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, made a \u201cstrong suggestion\u201d the hearings be postponed. In light of the anticipated crowd of citizens, she noted that \u201cthe virus can be spread among people [in] close contact \u2014 less than six feet apart.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alexander-Scott observed, \u201cCancelling or postponing large events is an important tool to limit the spread in Rhode Island,\u201d<\/p>\n

Among the reasons a large crowd was expected at the hearing was the fact that approximately 17 bills dealing with guns were scheduled for consideration.<\/p>\n

One of the bills \u201cdefines \u2018assault weapons\u2019 and bans selling them if they are not registered.\u201d Another bills \u201cdefines large-capacity weapons feeding devices and bans them,\u201d too.<\/p>\n

Another bill that would have been discussed was designed to prohibit \u201cteachers from being offered an incentive to get firearms licenses,\u201d while yet another would have put new storage requirements and penalties in place for law-abiding gun owners.<\/p>\n

The Associated Press\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that the \u201chearing on gun control measures\u201d will be rescheduled, but provided no time-frame in which the rescheduled hearing might occur.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
