Bill Gates is Wrong: Chinas\u2019s Coronavirus Coverup is not a \u2018Distraction.\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates was surely speaking for a lot of people when he dismissed criticism of the Chinese government\u2019s handling of the novel\u00a0coronavirus<\/a>\u00a0pandemic as a \u201cdistraction\u201d from the important work of fighting the virus here at home.<\/p>\n Yet the Chinese Communist Party is still working full time to cover up information about the outbreak and the Chinese government\u2019s own failures. By so doing, it continues to threaten the health and lives of Americans. That can\u2019t be ignored.<\/strong><\/p>\n Gates\u00a0argued\u00a0<\/a>Sunday on CNN that examining the Chinese government\u2019s record of\u00a0hiding information\u00a0<\/a>about the coronavirus outbreak,\u00a0putting out\u00a0<\/a>false information,\u00a0silencing critics\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0thwarting attempts\u00a0<\/a>to investigate its true origin is not useful at this time \u201cbecause it doesn\u2019t affect how we act today.\u201d He said Beijing \u201cdid a lot of things right at the beginning\u201d and has come under unfair criticism, \u201cbut it\u2019s not even time for that discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n Various groups \u2014 from\u00a0conservative media outlets<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0Chinese Communist Party<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 immediately seized upon his remarks to further their own agendas. But let\u2019s focus on the bottom line: Gates\u2019s comments are simply wrong, and dangerously so. Beijing\u2019s bad behavior is neither past nor benign. In fact, it continues to put us at increased risk.<\/p>\n Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for depoliticizing the issue when asked about Gates\u2019s comments Wednesday on Fox News.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not a distraction,\u201d\u00a0he said<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve had now thousands of Americans that have died as a result of this virus, and we know where that virus started. I hope this doesn\u2019t become partisan.
