Click or tap to follow the link.\" href=\"https:\/\/nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2F2020%2F07%2F23%2Feating-chocolate-weekly-cuts-risk-of-heart-disease-study-says%2F&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7Ce006e4c02a844757511708d82f6769be%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637311468479706907&amp;sdata=CT%2FdNqhIbM3tE3riHyT9Tiz%2Fm%2BbOpI49HhX678tftfo%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"Verified\">Eating chocolate weekly cuts risk of heart disease, study says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There is good news for chocoholics, who can cut the risk of heart disease by indulging at least once a week, according to new research.<\/p>\n<p>A study of 336,289 people found that consuming chocolate more than once a week reduced the risk of developing coronary heart disease by 8 percent when compared to those who eat it less frequently,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/health\/eating-chocolate-weekly-cuts-risk-heart-disease-study-a4506761.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Standard reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur study suggests that chocolate helps keep the heart\u2019s blood vessels healthy,\u201d said the study\u2019s author, Dr. Chayakrit Krittanawong of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers combined six studies to study the link between chocolate consumption and coronary heart disease, a condition in which the arteries become blocked by a build-up of fatty substances.<\/p>\n<p>They said nutrients in chocolate \u2014 including flavonoids, methylxanthines, polyphenols and stearic acid \u2014 may reduce inflammation and increase good cholesterol.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But Krittanawong had a caveat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cModerate amounts of chocolate seem to protect the coronary arteries but it\u2019s likely that large quantities do not,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe calories, sugar, milk and fat in commercially available products need to be considered, particularly in diabetics and obese people,\u201d Krittanawong added.<\/p>\n<p>The participants, who were from the US, Sweden and Australia, had an average follow-up time of about nine years in the studies that spanned the past five decades.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis \u2014 published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology Research \u2014 found that 14,043 of the participants developed coronary heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with eating chocolate less than once a week, consuming it regularly more than once a week was associated with an 8 percent lower risk of the disease, the authors said.<\/p>\n<p>The study did not consider whether any particular kind of chocolate is better, or whether there is an ideal portion size.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eating chocolate weekly cuts risk of heart disease, study says.
