{"id":58915,"date":"2020-08-29T03:49:59","date_gmt":"2020-08-29T08:49:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=58915"},"modified":"2020-08-30T04:52:52","modified_gmt":"2020-08-30T09:52:52","slug":"58915","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=58915","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8220;Haizhou Hu, 34, a Chinese national&#8230;.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nCan you say: &#8216;<strong><em>People&#8217;s Liberation Army Spy&#8217; ?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nI thought you could.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/08\/28\/university-virginia-haizhou-hu-china-arrested-university-california-los-angeles-guan-lei\/\">University Of Virginia Researcher Charged After Trying To Board Flight To China While Allegedly In Possession Of Stolen Research<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A researcher at the University of Virginia who was arrested while trying to board a plane to China with allegedly stolen research has been charged with federal crimes, including theft of trade secrets, the Justice Department announced Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Haizhou Hu, 34, a Chinese national, roused the suspicions of authorities after a routine screening at Chicago\u2019s O\u2019Hare Airport Aug. 25 as he was trying to board a flight to China. \u201cThe screening revealed Hu was alleged to be in possession of bio-inspired research simulation software code that he was not authorized to possess,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Hu was charged with accessing a computer without authorization or exceeding authorization to obtain information from a protected computer and theft of trade secrets. He was conducting research in bio-mimics and fluid dynamics at the university.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/07\/09\/professor-researcher-song-guo-zheng-arrested-china-ties-ohio-state-university\/\">researchers<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/05\/11\/emory-university-professor-pleads-guilty-xiao-jiang-li-justice-department-china-funding-tax-return\/\">professors<\/a>\u00a0at American universities have been arrested in 2019 and 2020 as the Justice Department cracks down on Beijing\u2019s influence on college campuses, often on charges related to lying about ties with the Chinese government.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/chinese-national-charged-destroying-hard-drive-during-fbi-investigation-possible-transfer\">announced<\/a>\u00a0the arrest of another Chinese national, who was a researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles. Guan Lei, 29, was charged with destroying evidence to obstruct an FBI investigation. Lei was in the U.S. on a J-1 non-immigrant visa.<\/p>\n<p>Lei allegedly threw a hard drive into a trash dumpster near his resident on July 25, and the FBI recovered the hard drive after Leiwas not allowed to board a flight to China and didn\u2019t allow the FBI to examine his computer.<\/p>\n<p>The data on the hard drive was allegedly \u201cremoved deliberately and by force,\u201d the statement said. He is being investigated for possibly transferring sensitive U.S. software to China\u2019s National University of Defense Technology (NUDT).<\/p>\n<p>Lei also allegedly lied about his ties to the People\u2019s Liberation Army, or China\u2019s military in his 2018 visa application.
