{"id":60804,"date":"2020-10-16T10:19:45","date_gmt":"2020-10-16T15:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=60804"},"modified":"2020-10-16T11:08:03","modified_gmt":"2020-10-16T16:08:03","slug":"60804","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=60804","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtkr.com\/news\/gun-owners-rally-outside-newport-news-police-headquarters-in-support-of-second-amendment-rights\">Gun owners rally outside Newport News Police headquarters in support of Second Amendment rights<\/a><\/p>\n<p>NEWPORT NEWS, Va. &#8211; Armed protesters gathered outside the Newport News Police Department headquarters exercising their Second Amendment rights, which they say are being taken away from them.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtkr.com\/news\/council-votes-to-approve-ordinance-banning-open-carry-of-firearms-in-newport-news-city-buildings-parks\">A city ordinance passed over the summer<\/a>\u00a0now bans open carry of firearms at city buildings, facilities and parks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ain\u2019t running! We ain\u2019t here to run!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of gun owners with their weapons in hand gathered outside the police headquarters, protesting against the ordinance they say is unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all here, and we are all heavily armed. We are unified, and if you mess with one of us, you are going to mess with all of us this time,\u201d said organizer Mike Dunn.<\/p>\n<p>Dunn was arrested last week for trying to go into Huntington Park with his gun. In response, he organized a protest in front of the police headquarters with Police Chief Steve Drew\u2019s \u201cOK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was good dialogue. They didn\u2019t have to talk to me &#8211; I appreciate they did, but I think it shows good faith,\u201d said Chief Drew.<\/p>\n<p>According to Chief Drew, the group did not defy the city ordinance since they were outside headquarters.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it\u2019s inside a city building or inside a city building or park \u2013 that\u2019s what the ordinance addresses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Black Lives Matter 757 also joined Dunn and the Boogaloo Bois.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do believe that Black lives matter,\u201d Dunn said.<\/p>\n<p>They say the demonstration is to stand united.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPutting aside party lines, party differences, beliefs to come together in the support of the Second Amendment,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Jay Boone with Black Lives Matter 757 said she\u2019s noticed a difference in the way officers treat people with weapons versus people who are marching without one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was out here marching a couple weeks ago, it was complete riot gear and S.W.A.T. They were antagonizing our group and infringing on our rights,\u201d Boone said.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s referring to the incident after\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtkr.com\/news\/election-2020\/president-trump-to-hold-make-america-great-again-rally-in-newport-news-on-september-25\">the recent Trump rally in the city.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chief Drew says protesters in that rally put officers the public in danger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat night, that incident at 11:30 at night walking against traffic is the only time we had to use our hands and make arrests,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is just a message to our movement to see what measures we need to take going forward so that we are protected as well when we are exercising our First Amendment rights,\u201d Boone said.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Drew wants to remind the community that he welcomes peaceful protesting around the city and at police headquarters as long as the law is followed<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gun owners rally outside Newport News Police headquarters in support of Second Amendment rights NEWPORT NEWS, Va. &#8211; Armed protesters gathered outside the Newport News Police Department headquarters exercising their Second Amendment rights, which they say are being taken away from them.
