{"id":61138,"date":"2020-10-27T12:13:11","date_gmt":"2020-10-27T17:13:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=61138"},"modified":"2020-10-27T12:13:11","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T17:13:11","slug":"61138","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=61138","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2020\/10\/27\/biden-becoming-president-not-make-everything-suddenly-normal-column\/6042756002\/\">Sorry, there will be no return to normalcy under Joe Biden<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the presidential campaign enters its final phase, one of the messages of the Biden campaign is that putting him, a <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/bioguideretro.congress.gov\/Home\/MemberDetails?memIndex=b000444\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">47-year veteran of national politics<\/a>, into the White House will return us to something approaching normal.\u00a0With Biden in charge, all the Trump craziness will expire, and things will be safe, sane\u00a0and familiar.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, there\u2019s no chance of this happening.\u00a0If Biden wins, things won\u2019t go back to \u201cnormal.\u201d\u00a0You probably won\u2019t even hear less from Donald Trump.\u00a0And in a lot of areas, like foreign policy, it turns out the establishment\u2019s version of normal wasn\u2019t all that normal anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Many of my lefty friends want Biden to win not so much over policy as because they have a visceral reaction to President Donald Trump.\u00a0They hate the sight of his face, the sound of his voice, even the mention of his name.\u00a0Electing Biden, they expect, will sweep Trump off the national stage.<\/p>\n<p>But will it?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">We are a long way from normalcy<\/h2>\n<p>Trump was big on the national stage long before he was president.\u00a0Why would he go away after the election is over?\u00a0He\u2019ll still have tens of millions of (probably angry) followers, deep pockets\u00a0and a huge megaphone.<\/p>\n<p>There has already been some talk of Trump starting his own television network to rival Fox News, and\/or his own social media platform\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the latter made more plausible by the heavy censorious hands of those running Twitter and Facebook \u2014\u00a0and I suspect that Trump would regard a 2020 loss as a setback, not a defeat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about-the-white-house\/presidents\/grover-cleveland-24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">Grover Cleveland\u00a0<\/a>came back to win a second term after losing the White House, Trump might reason.\u00a0Why not me?\u00a0He\u2019ll probably hold campaign-style rallies around the country starting right after the election.<\/p>\n<p>And the deep toxicity of national politics, which grew worse after the 2016 election but which has been brewing at least since the turn of the millennium, is not going to go away. In fact, a lot of what we\u2019re hearing from Biden supporters suggests that it will get worse under a Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Democrats are already calling for a Biden administration<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/legalinsurrection.com\/2020\/10\/biden-leaves-door-open-to-supreme-court-packing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">\u00a0to pack\u00a0the Supreme Court<\/a>\u00a0by adding new justices until Democrats have a\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/issuesinsights.com\/2020\/10\/12\/dems-plan-to-pack-the-senate-and-the-electoral-college-as-well-as-the-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">majority, to pack the Senate<\/a>\u00a0by admitting Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.,\u00a0as states, and even to establish a\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bizpacreview.com\/2020\/10\/19\/post-election-commission-to-blacklist-censor-trump-supporters-suggested-by-professor-hailed-by-left-986604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">\u201ctruth and reconciliation commission\u201d\u00a0<\/a>in which Republicans will be dragged\u00a0in front of the public and forced to confess the error of their ways.\u00a0And, of course,<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drdoodlie1994\/status\/1317628706479919104?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1317628706479919104%7Ctwgr%5Eshare_3%2Ccontainerclick_1&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bizpacreview.com%2F2020%2F10%2F19%2Fpost-election-commission-to-blacklist-censor-trump-supporters-suggested-by-professor-hailed-by-left-986604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">\u00a0abolishing the Electoral College<\/a>.\u00a0None of that is normal.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-usatoday-native-article_link-opinion-3\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-google-query-id=\"CK2G57ed1ewCFWbpwAodlZYGiw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_7103\/usatoday\/native-article_link\/opinion_1__container__\">Neither is a <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/biden-claimed-he-never-wanted-ban-fracking-he-did-1541552\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">ban on oil and gas fracking<\/a>, when hydraulic fracturing\u00a0has brought us\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/ask\/answers\/012915\/how-has-fracking-helped-us-decrease-dependence-foreign-oil.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">energy independence<\/a>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>a goal that presidents of both parties sought for 50 years but that was only achieved in the past few years.\u00a0Why would we throw that away now, reempowering oil exporters like Iran, Saudi Arabia\u00a0and Vladimir Putin\u2019s Russia?\u00a0That\u2019s not normal.\u00a0But Democrats want it and Biden seems likely to go along, though he has more recently backed away from that position.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<aside id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\" aria-label=\"Newsletter signup form\">\n<div class=\"label\" hidden=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"message\">\n<p class=\"description\">(Nor were things all that \u201cnormal\u201d pre-Trump in the foreign policy area. Now we have <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2020\/09\/10\/middle-east-peace-economy-space-travel-good-news-column\/5739626002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">historic Middle East peace agreements<\/a>.\u00a0My Facebook Memories feature just brought up a Chicago Tribune story from the late Obama administration\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/nation-world\/ct-syria-militias-us-cia-islamic-state-20160326-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">with this headline<\/a>: &#8220;CIA-armed militias are shooting at Pentagon-armed ones in Syria.&#8221;\u00a0Not normal \u2014\u00a0or, if it were, then I\u2019m glad we\u2019re over it.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">COVID-19 won&#8217;t simply disappear<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Of course, maybe a \u201creturn to normal\u201d really just means an end to worries about the\u00a0coronavirus, which has in fact turned the world upside down.\u00a0Biden is running commercials suggesting that tens of thousands of deaths from coronavirus are\u00a0Trump\u2019s fault.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">That\u2019s a pretty weak argument,\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/22102\/daily-covid-19-cases-in-the-us-and-the-eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">given that Europe is doing no better<\/a>\u00a0than the United States, and arguably is doing worse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Politicize things as much as you want \u2014\u00a0and Biden, who\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/04\/03\/politics\/joe-biden-trump-china-coronavirus\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">accused the president of xenophobia after\u00a0Trump\u2019s January order banning flights from China<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/news\/biden-blames-60k-deaths-on-trump-not-shutting-us-down-a-month-earlier-forgets-he-held-rallies-through-march-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">continued to hold mass rallies<\/a>\u00a0for two\u00a0weeks afterward even<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/graphics.reuters.com\/HEALTH-CORONAVIRUS-USA\/0100B5LQ46H\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">\u00a0after many states declared emergencies<\/a>,\u00a0is on thin ice here in claiming Trump acted too slowly<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014\u00a0the coronavirus isn\u2019t going away no matter who is in the White House on Jan.\u00a021.\u00a0It\u2019s an aspect of nature, over which politics has very little influence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">So forget talk of a return to normal under Biden.\u00a0It\u2019s not going to happen.\u00a0At most, you can vote for the flavor of abnormal that you prefer.
