It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.&#8221;<\/em>&#8212;Ronald Reagan<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/washington-secrets\/kids-today-4-in-10-call-constitution-outdated-ok-with-silencing-speech\">Kids today: 4 in 10 call Constitution \u2018outdated,\u2019 OK with silencing speech.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Free speech, support for the Constitution, and even having a variety of friends are taking a hit on America\u2019s campuses as college undergraduates appear to be adopting a \u201cmy way or the highway\u201d attitude.<\/p>\n<p>A new survey of campuses developing the nation\u2019s future leaders shows an antagonistic approach by students to views they don\u2019t agree with. And worse, a majority feel that they can\u2019t express a view different from those of their professors.<\/p>\n<p>The survey for Yale University\u2019s William F. Buckley Program, provided to Secrets, is the latest to show the fading of thought diversity on campuses and shrinking support for the First Amendment and the Constitution overall.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\">\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\">\n<figure class=\"Figure mb-1 mb-sm-3 mb-md-1 article-lead-photo data_invisible\" data-align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mediadc.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/02246d3\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/1710x962+0+0\/resize\/1710x962!\/quality\/90\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmediadc.brightspotcdn.com%2F9f%2F82%2Fa235e9854d49ab8cd63431160d5d%2Fscreen-shot-2020-10-28-at-8.14.39%20AM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2020-10-28 at 8.14.39 AM.png\" data-image-size=\"fixed\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Among the key findings in the survey of college undergraduates conducted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mclaughlinonline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">McLaughlin &amp; Associates<\/a>\u00a0for the program:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thirty-six percent believe the Constitution is outdated, while 52% call it \u201cimportant.\u201d A year ago, 63% called the founding document important.<\/li>\n<li>While support for the First Amendment is at 72%, that is the lowest in six years.<\/li>\n<li>More students, by a margin of 48%-41%, favor \u201cspeech codes.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>For the first time, a majority of students (52%) \u201cnow say they share the same opinions and beliefs as all or most of their friends.\u201d Only a third have friends who don\u2019t think like them.<\/li>\n<li>Forty percent agree that \u201cit is sometimes appropriate to shout down or disrupt a speaker on campus.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Thirty-nine percent \u201cagree that violence can be justified to prevent a person from using hate speech or making racially charged comments, while 51% disagree. This is the highest \u2018agree\u2019 number in four years and an eight-point increase from last year.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Fifty-three percent feel intimidated in sharing their views if they disagree with their professor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pollster Jim McLaughlin expressed surprise and concern over some of the results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese findings are a real indictment of the radical teachings of the American higher educational system and a total lack of understanding of the U.S. Constitution by students,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink about it. More than one-third of students call the 8th wonder of the world an outdated document, and a bare majority, 52%, call it an important document. What is interesting is that freshmen are more supportive than the seniors when it comes to the Constitution as the leftwing indoctrination seems to sink in,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\">\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\">\n<figure class=\"Figure mb-1 mb-sm-3 mb-md-1 article-lead-photo data_invisible\" data-align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mediadc.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/623168f\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/1698x950+0+0\/resize\/1698x950!\/quality\/90\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmediadc.brightspotcdn.com%2F65%2F75%2Ffced1908441f97948a52d54d0e1b%2Fscreen-shot-2020-10-28-at-8.14.57%20AM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2020-10-28 at 8.14.57 AM.png\" data-image-size=\"fixed\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>And noting the feeling that a majority of students have about clashing with their professors, he said, \u201cMost students are afraid of sharing their views.
