Then I consider that it would also mean that there will be no one to enforce gun laws&#8230;.<em>decisions, decisions.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=16256\">Ivy League librarians demand a \u2018world without policing\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A group of 13 \u201cabolitionist librarians\u201d from Ivy League universities who call themselves \u201cAbLA Ivy+\u201d is demanding that their colleagues \u201cimmediately begin the work of divesting from police and prisons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Association of Research Libraries released a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arl.org\/news\/association-of-research-libraries-condemns-racism-and-violence-against-black-communities-supports-protests-against-police-brutality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement\u00a0<\/a>in support of \u201cprotests against police brutality\u201d in June. It called on \u201cleaders of libraries and archives to examine our institutions\u2019 role in sustaining systems of inequity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The statement demands that \u201cmaterial resources are procured and highlighted to chronicle the history of white supremacy, oppression of marginalized peoples, and the laws and policies that create systemic inequities\u201d as well as attention to hiring those \u201cwho identify as Black, Indigenous, and people of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a more recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ablaivy.medium.com\/a-call-for-ivy-libraries-to-divest-from-police-and-prisons-and-invest-in-life-giving-resources-fdd5889270df\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>, AbLA Ivy+ claims that while these actions should be \u201capplauded,\u201d they \u201chave not gone far enough.&#8221; The group wants Ivy League librarians to \u201cexplicitly name policing itself as the problem\u201d and take actions that will lead to the \u201ccomplete abolition of law enforcement.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe solution to police violence is not reform but an abolition of policing in all its forms. Therefore, we call on the leadership of our institutions and all of our colleagues to embrace an abolitionist vision of a hopeful, life-affirming future and to immediately begin the work of divesting from police and prisons with the ultimate goal of the complete abolition of law enforcement and surveillance from library spaces, campuses, communities \u2014 in short, everywhere,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The first demand calls for Ivy League libraries to \u201csever all relationships \u2014 formal and informal \u2014 with local police departments as demanded by student and community activist groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">AbLA Ivy+ also wants libraries to \u201cremove any reliance on law enforcement as a means of addressing conflicts that arise in all library spaces by 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The group calls for a complete divestment from law enforcement, policing and \u201ccompanies that use prison labor,&#8221; the prohibition of cameras in libraries, and \u201cthe development of data policies and practices that draw on feminist and decolonial praxis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Citing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nomadj1s\/status\/1294390385947615233?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claim\u00a0<\/a>that 73 percent of traffic stops by the University of Chicago Police Department were Black individuals, AbLA Ivy+ claimed that law enforcement officers \u201cdo not keep campuses safe.\u201d Because of this, the group wants to \u201cjoin, build, &amp; sustain a world without policing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe demand that our university and college libraries formally endorse these demands and stand in support with these groups towards a police-free future,\u201d the statement says. In the statement\u2019s conclusion, the Ivy League librarians take responsibility for the \u201cprivilege and power\u201d they hold.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe recognize that librarianship, an overwhelmingly white profession, has systematically marginalized BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and librarians with disabilities,\u201d the statement says.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cReckoning with our own histories of and complicity in white supremacy and anti-Black racism is in the best interest not only of our institutions and patrons but our profession at large,\u201d the statement continues.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">More than 700 individuals and organizations have signed the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSf3FGw1CmK0OOeBgImXE8wnbBeP3NjKws9Jfujf-Ij36uOjQg\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">petition\u00a0<\/a>to stand in solidarity with the movement.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe letter struck me as the latest instance of self-flagellating nonsense from within academia. Claiming libraries as institutions of white supremacy and racism is a pitiful and dishonest grasp for attention and I am disappointed that the University of Chicago would engage with such drivel,&#8221;\u00a0<em>Campus Reform<\/em>\u00a0correspondent and University of Chicago student\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/profile?pid=5457500\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Capizzi<\/a>\u00a0told\u00a0<em>Campus Reform<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIf these librarians crave genuine examples of ideological suppression, racial division, and white supremacy, I suggest that they refer to their history sections on twentieth-century Europe,\u201d Capizzi concluded.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">AbLA \u00a0Ivy+ members did not respond to\u00a0<em>Campus Reform<\/em>\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I often think about giving these over-educated morons exactly what they&#8217;re asking for.
