{"id":62582,"date":"2020-12-07T23:25:28","date_gmt":"2020-12-08T05:25:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=62582"},"modified":"2020-12-07T23:25:28","modified_gmt":"2020-12-08T05:25:28","slug":"62582","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=62582","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/12\/07\/legendary-airman-chuck-yeager-dead-at-97\/\">Legendary airman Chuck Yeager dead at 97<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chuck Yeager \u2014 the legendary airman who was the first person in history confirmed to break the sound barrier \u2014 died on Monday night at age 97, according to a post on his verified Twitter account.<\/p>\n<p>The famed test pilot\u2019s death was announced in a heartfelt statement by his wife of 17 years, Victoria Yeager.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is w\/ profound sorrow, I must tell you that my life love General Chuck Yeager passed just before 9pm ET,\u201d she wrote on his account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn incredible life well lived, America\u2019s greatest Pilot, &amp; a legacy of strength, adventure, &amp; patriotism will be remembered forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A World War II fighter pilot, Yeager rocketed into history by breaking the sound barrier in the experimental Bell X-1 research aircraft in 1947, helping to pave the way for the US space program.<\/p>\n<p>Yeager reached a then astounding 40,000 feet and notched a speed of over 662 miles per hour in his historic Southern California flight.<\/p>\n<p>Yeager\u2019s life was famously portrayed in Tom Wolfe\u2019s 1979 tome \u201cThe Right Stuff,\u201d \u2014 which was later adapted into an Oscar-winning film \u2014 chronicling the postwar research in high-speed aircraft that led to NASA\u2019s Project Mercury.<\/p>\n<p>Yeager was born in West Virginia in 1923.
