Biden administration opens another tent city to detain surge of illegal migrants<\/a><\/p>\n The Biden administration is facing fresh spikes of over 100 percent in illegal border crossings from this time last year and has opened another tent city to detain illegal immigrants in Texas, US Customs and Border Protection has announced.<\/p>\n The Border Patrol revealed in a report released Wednesday that the number of migrants apprehended at the border in the month of January reached nearly 78,000, up from 36,679 in January 2020.<\/p>\n Single adult Mexican citizens accounted for more than 37,000 CBP encounters, a 119 percent increase from this time last year, according to the agency.<\/p>\n Amid the surge, a new \u201csoft-sided facility\u201d was established this week by the agency in Donna, Texas, to hold individuals originally staying at the Centralized Processing Center in McAllen, Texas.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Donna facility is \u201cweatherproof, climate-controlled, and provide[s] ample areas for eating, sleeping, and personal hygiene,\u201d CBP said in a statement Tuesday.<\/p>\n The agency went on to call the Donna location \u201ca considerable upgrade from previous soft-sided facilities,\u201d touting its 160,000 square feet of covered area.<\/p>\n The Trump administration\u00a0faced considerable criticism<\/a>\u00a0by then-candidate Joe Biden and Democrats over its use of temporary shelters, also known as \u201ctent cities,\u201d in towns across the southern border.<\/p>\n Being temporary, these housing facilities are typically not held to the same regulatory standards as long-term shelters.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Donna location was chosen because it is central to Border Patrol stations throughout the Rio Grande Valley Sector,\u201d a CBP spokesperson said this week of the newest facility.<\/p>\n The Biden administration has opened this tent city to detain illegal migrants in Donna, Texas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Nicholas Loya via REUTERS<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n This tent city erected under President Biden is not the first of his young administration.<\/p>\n Last week, the Department of Health and Human Services said it would\u00a0open an overflow facility<\/a>\u00a0able to accommodate up to 700 migrant children within the next two weeks.<\/p>\n In a statement released by the Office of Refugee Resettlement, the department announced plans to reopen a \u201ctemporary Influx Care Facility\u201d in Carrizo Springs, Texas.<\/p>\n \u201cInitially, the Carrizo Springs ICF will accommodate approximately 700 children in hard-sided structures.
