The top digital journalism professor at Columbia University recently called for some center-right news outlets to be censored in the name of cracking down on misinformation.<\/p>\n

Professor Emily Bell, director of the Tow Center for Digital Media, said it is not an infringement of the First Amendment to audit and vet some news outlets to promote a \u201ctruthful news environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

She made the comments in response to concerns among U.S. Reps. Jerry McNerney and Anna Eshoo, who\u00a0sent letters<\/a>\u00a0to a multitude of streaming companies, including AT&T, Verizon, Roku, Amazon, Apple, Comcast, Charter, Dish, Cox and Hulu,\u00a0asking them<\/a>\u00a0about censoring \u201cmisinformation\u201d in the conservative media.<\/p>\n

The Democratic senior members expressed that \u201cright-wing media ecosystem[s]\u201d like \u201cNewsmax, One America News Network (OANN), and Fox News\u201d must be held accountable for supposed fallacies on their networks and suggested they be booted from these venues.<\/p>\n

\u201cHave you taken any adverse actions against a channel, including Fox News, Newsmax, and OANN, for using your platform to disseminate disinformation related directly or indirectly to the November 3, 2020 elections, the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection, or COVID-19 misinformation,\u201d the letter asks.<\/p>\n

The justification for this, according to these lawmakers, is that the media \u201cradicalizes individuals to commit seditious acts and rejects public health best practices, among other issues in our public discourse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. McNerney, in a\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0about his letter, said he blames conservative media for the attack at the Capitol: \u201c[t]his is the information that\u2019s causing real harm in this country\u2026 We had five people killed, we had a hundred people injured and the whole world was watching horror as the seed of democracy in this country was attacked.\u201d<\/p>\n

At a Feb. 24\u00a0hearing<\/a>\u00a0on the matter, titled \u201cFanning the Flames: Disinformation and Extremism in the Media,\u201d one key witness was Professor Bell. It was hosted by the Committee on Energy and Commerce\u2019s subcommittee on communications and technology.<\/p>\n

Bell said that the unprecedented events of 2020 and 2021 coincided with \u201cwidespread and often politized information\u201d on \u201cconservative cable news channels\u201d and that local reporters need to \u201clearn new cadence.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that the country needs to \u201crethink what public broadcasting is in the digital age\u201d and \u201capply some pressure to the platform companies to allow much greater auditing.\u201d<\/p>\n
