{"id":66879,"date":"2021-04-15T14:34:50","date_gmt":"2021-04-15T19:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=66879"},"modified":"2021-04-15T14:34:50","modified_gmt":"2021-04-15T19:34:50","slug":"66879","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=66879","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/oklahoma-senate-passes-bill-protecting-drivers-hit-protesters\">Oklahoma Senate passes bill protecting drivers who hit protesters blocking roadways<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A bill meant to protect drivers who hit protesters during the course of fleeing a riot passed the Oklahoma Senate on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2021-22%20FLR\/HFLR\/HB1674%20HFLR.PDF\">House Bill 1674<\/a>, which passed through the Senate by a vote of 38-10, would increase penalties for blocking roadways while also providing immunity to drivers who kill or injure motorists while fleeing the scene of a riot in fear for their lives,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/legislature-police-oklahoma-legislation-police-brutality-f938df121ef6fcd514df3e7ba58a59cb\"><u>according to the\u00a0<\/u><i>Associated Press<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The bill comes in response to an incident in Tulsa, Oklahoma, last year in which a driver in a pickup truck drove through a group of George Floyd protesters blocking an interstate and injured several protesters. The driver, whose family was in the car, was not charged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids cowered in the back seat because they feared for their lives,\u201d one of the Republican sponsors of the bill, Rob Standridge, said. \u201cThat\u2019s what this bill is about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>According to the bill, it would become a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $5,000 fine for protesters who block a public street.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Democrats\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox23.com\/news\/local\/oklahoma-legislature-passes-bill-protecting-drivers-who-hit-protesters-sending-stitts-desk\/LUPZIRWITRBVLHGT6EOWL5MAXI\/\"><u>took issue with the bill<\/u><\/a>, specifically with how the legislation\u2019s language defined the word &#8220;riot,&#8221; wondering aloud if \u201cpeaceful protesters\u201d could be targeted.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\">\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\">\n<div class=\"TweetEmbed\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><strong>The bill now heads to the desk of Oklahoma\u2019s Republican governor, Kevin Stitt, for approval.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oklahoma Senate passes bill protecting drivers who hit protesters blocking roadways A bill meant to protect drivers who hit protesters during the course of fleeing a riot passed the Oklahoma Senate on Wednesday.
