The drug works by targeting the main protease of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. By inhibiting the protease, the drug prevents the virus from reproducing itself within the body.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">Mikael Dolsten, Pfizer\u2019s chief science officer, said in a press release that the pill could be prescribed \u201cat the first sign of infection\u201d without requiring critical care or hospitalization.<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor the foreseeable future, we will expect to see continued outbreaks from COVID-19,\u201d Charlotte Allerton, Pfizer\u2019s head of medicine design, told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cen.acs.org\/acs-news\/acs-meeting-news\/Pfizer-unveils-oral-SARS-CoV\/99\/i13\">C&amp;EN<\/a>. \u201cAnd therefore, as with all viral pandemics, it\u2019s important we have a full toolbox on how to address it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Protease inhibitors are currently used to treat HIV around the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, no need to rush to get the &#8216;vaccine&#8217; then?
