Arizona House Passes Bill Requiring Schools Share Stories From People Who Fled Communism.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Republican-majority\u00a0Arizona<\/a>\u00a0House on June 25 approved a bill that could mandate that\u00a0school<\/a>\u00a0teachers share stories from people who fled\u00a0communism<\/a>\u00a0as part of the curriculum.<\/p>\n

The requirement is part of House Bill 2898 (pdf<\/a>), which includes changes in laws governing K\u201312 education in the state. The language was inserted by Republican state Rep. Judy Burges, and states that the measure will prepare students to be \u201ccivically responsible and knowledgeable adults.\u201d<\/p>\n

Public schools would be required to teach \u201ca comparative discussion of political ideologies, such as communism and totalitarianism, the conflict with the principles of freedom and democracy essential to the founding principles of the United States\u201d among other changes, the bill\u2019s text states.<\/p>\n

Arizona\u2019s Department of Education must also develop new civics education standards for school districts and charter schools to include, such as on the original intent of America\u2019s Founding Documents and principles of the United States, including the expectation that U.S. citizens will be responsible for preserving and defending \u201cthe blessings of liberty inherited from prior generations and secured by the United States Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The education board would also have to develop a list of oral history resources that provide \u201cpatriotism based on first-person accounts of victims of other nations\u2019 governing philosophies who can compare those philosophies with those of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reality is [that] one of the greatest threats facing the globe today is communism and totalitarianism,\u201d Republican state Rep. Jake Hoffman said, Capitol Media Services reported.\u00a0\u201cWe have governments like the communist Chinese government, that their stated goal is to be the world\u2019s sole and only superpower, and that they will achieve that goal through any means possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The legislation now heads to the state Senate for consideration.<\/p>\n

The measure advanced days after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an executive order on education that pushes back against\u00a0critical race theory, and also creates an education program that will require students to be taught about \u201cthe evils of communism.\u201d<\/p>\n

In short, high schools must provide \u201cinstruction on the evils of communism and totalitarian ideology,\u201d DeSantis said, noting that there are Florida residents who have escaped totalitarian regimes and communist dictatorships, such as from Cuba and Vietnam, to live in America.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want all students to understand the difference,\u201d he said. \u201cWhy would somebody flee across shark-infested waters \u2026 why would people leave these countries and risk their lives to be able to come here? It\u2019s important that students understand that.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeSantis on June 22 also signed into law\u00a0HB 5<\/a>, which requires the\u00a0Florida Department of Education to develop an integrated K\u201312 civic education curriculum that includes teaching students about citizens\u2019 shared rights under the Constitution and Bill of Rights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
