There&#39;s a class for black students and a class for white students.<\/p>\n<p>This is your country on critical race theory. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6dPjAMx9D4\">https:\/\/t.co\/6dPjAMx9D4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Matt Wolking (@MattWolking) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MattWolking\/status\/1425444327585632258?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 11, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">ATLANTA \u2014 A parent has filed a federal complaint against her child\u2019s school, alleging it segregated classes based on race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">She said it was a practice put in place by the school\u2019s principal, who thought she was doing what was best for all students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">Atlanta Public Schools confirmed to\u00a0Channel 2\u2032s Tom Jones that it has wrapped up its investigation into the allegations and has taken action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">Parent Kila Posey still can\u2019t believe a principal thought separating students by race was a good idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve lost sleep like trying to figure out why would a person do this,\u201d Posey said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">She told Jones she was stunned when she learned about classes segregated by race at Mary Lin Elementary School last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">A practice put in place and condoned by principal Sharyn Briscoe, according to Posey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">\u201cFirst, it was just disbelief that I was having this conversation in 2020 with a person that looks just like me \u2014 a Black woman,\u201d Posey said. \u201cIt\u2019s segregating classrooms. You cannot segregate classrooms. You can\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">Posey said she found out the school was putting Black students in two separate classes with two separate teachers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">The white kids were placed in six classes with six different teachers.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">The parent said she found this out when she let Briscoe know she wanted her child placed in the classroom of a teacher she thought would be a good fit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">Posey said the principal told her that wouldn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">\u201cShe said that\u2019s not one of the Black classes, and I immediately said, \u2018What does that mean?\u2019 I was confused. I asked for more clarification. I was like, \u2018We have those in the school?\u2019 And she proceeded to say, \u2018Yes. I have decided that I\u2019m going to place all of the Black students in two classes,\u2019\u201d Posey said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">Posey said she insisted her child be placed in a class with white students. She said Briscoe explained her child would be isolated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">\u201cI explained to her she shouldn\u2019t be isolated or punished because I\u2019m unwilling to go along with your illegal and unethical practice,\u201d Posey said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">The Poseys recorded a call with an assistant principal where they complained about the segregated classes. The administrator confirmed it was the principal\u2019s decision and seemed to offer an explanation for why the classes were set up this way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">\u201cI just wish we had more Black kids, and then some of them are in a class because of the services that they need,\u201d the administrator said on the recording.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">Kila Posey has filed a discrimination complaint with the U.S. Department of Education\u2019s Office of Civil Rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">Her attorney Sharese Shields said what\u2019s going on at Mary Lin is a violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">\u201cTitle VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 says that you cannot treat one group of people differently based upon race, and that is what is going on at Mary Lin,\u201d Shields said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">Jones contacted Atlanta Public Schools about Posey\u2019s allegations. The school district sent him a statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">\u201cAtlanta public schools does not condone the assigning of students to classrooms based on race. The district conducted a review of the allegations. Appropriate actions were taken to address the issue and the matter was closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">The district did not say what actions it took.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">Posey isn\u2019t satisfied. She told Jones that she wants the principal and her administration removed for even allowing a system of segregated classes at the school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 iyJUDd body-paragraph\">\u201cMy community, had they known about this, would probably be extremely upset.
