In\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Atlantic<\/em>\u00a0a couple of weeks ago, Tom Nichols\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2021\/08\/afghanistan-your-fault\/619769\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cAfghanistan Is Your Fault.\u201d \u201cAmerican citizens,\u201d Nichols suggested, \u201cwill separate into their usual camps and identify all of the obvious causes and culprits except for one: themselves.\u201d Today, Max Boot makes the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/08\/29\/whos-blame-deaths-13-service-members-kabul-we-all-are\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">same argument<\/a> in the Post. \u201cWho\u2019s to blame for the deaths of 13 service members in Kabul?\u201d he asks. Answer: \u201cWe all are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is of a piece with the tendency of journalists and historians to start\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/presidency-too-big-job-70121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">muttering about<\/a>\u00a0how the presidency is \u201ctoo big for one man\u201d when the bad president in question is a Democrat.<\/strong> Under these terms, Republicans just aren\u2019t up to the job, while Democrats are the victims of design or modernity or of the public being feckless. Last year, coronavirus was Trump\u2019s fault. Now, it\u2019s the fault of Republican governors and the unvaccinated (well, only\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2021\/08\/the-lefts-irrational-covid-rage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>some<\/em>\u00a0of the unvaccinated<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Still, this has happened pretty quickly with Joe Biden. Usually, it takes a couple of years before the press starts to sound like a bunch of hippies sitting around a fire saying, \u201cyou know, in a\u00a0<em>sense<\/em>, you\u2019re me and I\u2019m you, and all of us are\u00a0<em>we \u2014\u00a0<\/em>and so when the president makes a mistake, it\u2019s really, like, the\u00a0<em>universe<\/em>\u00a0making a mistake, isn\u2019t it? And, y\u2019know, we\u2019re in the universe, so we\u00a0<em>are<\/em>\u00a0the presidency.
