General Milley told Trump the George Floyd protests were no big deal<\/a>.<\/p>\n Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley dismissed the George Floyd riots as \u201cpenny packet protests\u201d \u2014 insisting they weren\u2019t an insurrection because the mobs only \u201cused spray paint,\u201d according to a new book.<\/p>\n The under-fire general \u2014 accused of\u00a0going behind President Donald Trump\u2019s back<\/a>\u00a0to contact his Chinese counterpart \u2014 wildly downplayed the riots when Trump raised fears they were \u201cburning America down,\u201d\u00a0according to Fox News<\/a>\u00a0excerpts from the new book, \u201cPeril.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMr. President, they are not burning it down,\u201d he told the alarmed commander-in-chief, according to authors Bob Woodward and Robert Costa.<\/p>\n \u201cThey used spray paint, Mr. President, that\u2019s not an insurrection,\u201d he told Trump.<\/p>\n It was not immediately clear when the conversation happened, but violent, fiery protests broke out in cities across the US\u00a0soon after Floyd\u2019s death<\/a>\u00a0at the hands of Minneapolis police in May 2020.<\/p>\n New York City saw\u00a0mass looting and fires\u00a0<\/a>in the street, including torched police vehicles, while other cities saw\u00a0deadly shootings\u00a0<\/a>within days, and thousands of\u00a0National Guard members\u00a0<\/a>were ultimately deployed in at least 15 states, Fox News also noted.<\/p>\n Milley, however, gestured to a portrait of President Abraham Lincoln as he tried to dismiss Trump\u2019s clear fears over the violence.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re a country of 330 million people. You\u2019ve got these penny packet protests,\u201d he said, using a term for something insignificant, according to the book being published Sept. 21.<\/p>\n Milley insisted it was not an issue for the US military \u2014 and instead said the protests were understandable given systemic racism, according to the Fox excerpts.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s pent up in communities that have been experiencing what they perceive to be police brutality,\u201d Milley reportedly told Trump.<\/p>\n But when the Jan. 6 Capitol riot happened, Milley believed it \u201cwas indeed a coup attempt and nothing less than \u2018treason,’\u201d the book said.<\/p>\n He feared that Trump might be looking for a \u201cReichstag moment\u201d and believed the attack \u201cso unimagined and savage, [it] could be a dress rehearsal for something larger,\u201d the authors wrote.<\/p>\n Milley\u2019s spokesperson told Fox News that his office was not commenting on the book.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Question O’ The Day.
