Anderson woman shoots and kills man suspected of breaking into her home<\/a><\/p>\n

ANDERSON, Ind. \u2014 An Anderson woman shot and killed a man suspected of breaking into her home overnight.<\/p>\n

911 dispatchers received a call from a female homeowner in the 1300 block of E. 8th Street around 12:47 a.m. The woman told police there was a break-in at the home, and she shot the suspected burglar.<\/p>\n

By the time police arrived, they found the alleged suspect dead in an upstairs bedroom.<\/p>\n

With home surveillance cameras rolling, prosecutors insist a man forced his way into the woman\u2019s home.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNeighbors had videos of him parking in front of the residence and looking through windows, ultimately breaking through the door and pulling a weapon out,\u201d said Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings.<\/p>\n

Prosecutor Cummings says the suspect could also be heard on video asking for money and pretending to be law enforcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was audio, and you could hear what he was saying inside. He said, \u2018It\u2019s the police.\u2019 He was claiming to be police officer, but he had a mask on,\u201d said Cummings.<\/p>\n

After retreating upstairs, police claim the homeowner shot the suspect then ran to a neighbor\u2019s house, and police were called.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYou know seeing it a few houses down, it\u2019s unnerving for sure,\u201d said neighbor Anthony Alfarano.<\/p>\n

Anthony lives along 8th street and carries a firearm himself.\u00a0 He believes, if the case is proven to be a home invasion, the woman had a right to defend her home and her children.<\/p>\n

\u201cSelf protection is your right in your home,\u201d said Alfarano.<\/p>\n

\u201cInside a person\u2019s house they can use deadly force, and that\u2019s called the castle doctrine,\u201d said attorney Mario Massillamany.<\/p>\n

Attorney Massillamany, who isn\u2019t involved with the case, also points out state lawmakers recently expanded the castle doctrine to provide even greater civil and criminal protections to homeowners.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe castle doctrine in Indiana is a pretty strong law.\u00a0You do not have a duty to retreat,\u201d said Massillamany.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn your home is probably the most protected place you can be,\u201d said Cummings.\u00a0\u201cIf you\u2019re breaking into someone\u2019s home in the middle of the night, if you don\u2019t get shot or killed you should feel fortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n

For their part, Anderson police did not want to comment on the shooting but say the case remains an active investigation.<\/p>\n

The Madison County coroner later identified the man killed as 40-year-old Jeffery Flowers.<\/p>\n

The scene is just a few block south of Anderson University, although there is not believed to be a connection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
