Biden to Suspend Vaccine Mandate for Fed Employees.<\/a><\/p>\n

Details are thin, but Presidentish Joe Biden reportedly will suspend his vaccine mandate for federal workers.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0a memo<\/a> issued by the Biden administration, the \u201cWhite House\u2019s Office of Management and Budget is telling federal agencies they should hold off on suspending or firing federal workers for not complying with the vaccine mandate until after the holidays.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is a huge cave for an administration whose remaining anti-COVID effort is focused almost exclusively on the vaccine mandate.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Further lockdowns are out,\u00a0according to one report<\/a>. People have lost patience with social distancing and travel restrictions. And it\u2019s probably not too much of an exaggeration to say that \u201cWhich famous person isn\u2019t wearing a mask today?\u201d has taken the place of \u201cWho in Hollywood is secretly gay?\u201d as America\u2019s favorite gossip topic.<\/p>\n

That leaves the mandate. So for the sake of public perception that Biden is doing something, no matter how ineffective or unconstitutional, he can\u2019t let go of it.<\/p>\n

But from here, it sure looks like Biden\u2019s temporary suspension could well become permanent.<\/p>\n

While 92% of federal workers have received at least one dose, it\u2019s unknown how many are fully dosed as Biden\u2019s mandate requires. How many are refusing both shots and how many got one shot but then said \u201cEnough!\u201d are both unknown.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly\u201d 60% of Americans are fully vaccinated. If the same percentage holds true for federal workers, that\u2019s four in ten who don\u2019t meet Biden\u2019s mandate.<\/p>\n

The federal government would have trouble functioning if 8% of them were suspended or fired. If that turned out to be 40%, the whole damn thing would shut down \u2014 during a supply chain crisis, I don\u2019t need to add.<\/p>\n

With resistance to the mandate\u00a0growing<\/a>, it\u2019s impossible to guess exactly how many federal workers will refuse second shots, or continue to resist even the first shot. But a safe guess would be \u201cmore.\u201d<\/p>\n

With all that in mind, is Biden really going to reinstate his mandate just as soon as the holidays are over?<\/p>\n

If federal workers can\u2019t be mandated \u2014 with all of Washington\u2019s pretensions about how valuable they are \u2014 then why should ordinary Americans be subject to a mandate?<\/p>\n

Politically, which would be worse: Caving on the unpopular mandate completely and looking like fools, or pushing ahead in the face of increasing resistance?<\/p>\n

These are the questions that must be roiling the West Wing, particularly since Biden\u2019s approval ratings are\u00a0deeper underwater<\/a>\u00a0than the wreck of the USS\u00a0Indianapolis<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Whatever answer they decide on, one thing is clear: Mandates risk bringing the country to another halt we simply can\u2019t afford, and now that Biden has allowed one crack in his COVID dam, there will be more.<\/p>\n

The memo brags \u2014 agency by agency \u2014 what percentage of federal workers have been vaccinated. However, it\u2019s still only one dose, not two.<\/p>\n

I wonder if the White House even knows how many of federal workers are fully vaccinated with both doses. Or maybe they do know, and that\u2019s why they\u2019re sticking to the single-dose numbers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
