That finding wasn\u2019t a surprise to NSSF. Hispanic-Americans, along with nearly every other demographic group, are embracing their right to lawfully purchase and own a firearm. Firearm industry retail survey data revealed this growing trend a year ago. That\u2019s when law-abiding Latinos purchased firearms in big numbers and the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/diversity-in-gun-ownership-nothing-new-to-firearm-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demographics<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of America\u2019s gun\u00a0owners continued to show growth.<\/p>\n<p>Hispanic-Americans aren\u2019t an outlier community and examples are plenty. Suburban swing voters and other minority groups demonstrated similar patterns as they saw policy failures affecting their safety, fully embraced lawful gun\u00a0ownership and exercised their Second Amendment right.<\/p>\n<p>The Axios\/Ipsos poll asked Hispanic-Americans about their top concerns and crime and violence came in at the number two spot at 30 percent \u2013 behind only COVID worries at 37 percent. Per\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/newsletters\/axios-am-42e1378d-2bee-443b-a611-bfd0c9cef1a9.html?chunk=1&amp;utm_term=emshare#story1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Axios<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe finding is a warning for President Biden ahead of next year\u2019s midterms.\u201d A similar Wall Street Journal\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/latino\/585381-democrats-worry-their-grip-on-hispanic-vote-is-loosening?rl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0from a week earlier showed Hispanic voters are turning away from Democrats, typically supportive of more gun\u00a0control, and are now nearly evenly split between their party preference.<\/p>\n<p>The 2022 elections mark the first regular national Election Day since the 2020 election over which time Americans have seen rampant violent crime in cities across the country, calls to defund the police and for prosecutors to go easy on convicted criminals. It also witnessed historic firearm sales.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Second Amendment Swings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The overlay of rising crime concerns for Hispanic-Americans and their firearm purchasing is stark. According to NSSF retailer\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssf-survey-reveals-broad-demographic-appeal-for-firearm-purchases-during-sales-surge-of-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey data<\/a><\/strong>, law-abiding Hispanic-Americans purchased firearms in 2020 at a 49 percent higher rate than they did in 2019. That swing of Hispanic-Americans\u2019 preference showed in the 2020 presidential election where former President Donald Trump\u2019s message of law and order and support for the Second Amendment resonated. The former president\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/06\/30\/new-trump-poll-women-hispanic-voters-497199\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">garnered 10 percent more<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0Hispanic-American vote share than he did in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The trends stood out in states like Texas and California.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lapoliticaonline.com\/nota\/132942-latino-gun-ownership-rises-amid-uncertainty-and-fears-of-unrest-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>LaPolitica Online<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0reported on the swing of Hispanic-Americans purchasing firearms. Rafael Cedillo owns a firearm safety business where he offers training and educational courses in El Paso where in 2019 a murderer killed 23 people at Walmart. \u201cIt\u2019s sad, but my business really booms after a tragic incident,\u201d Cedillo\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lapoliticaonline.com\/nota\/132942-latino-gun-ownership-rises-amid-uncertainty-and-fears-of-unrest-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0The firearm buying surge left his business busy. \u201cAfter the one in El Paso, my home, I couldn\u2019t fit everyone into my schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Latino voters in Texas have also failed to carry gun\u00a0control candidates over the finish line. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) defeated former U.S. Rep. Robert Francis \u201cBeto\u201d O\u2019Rourke in the 2018 senate race and Republican Gov. Greg Abbott received more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/beto-orourke-needs-surge-of-latino-turnout-to-beat-cruz-in-senate-race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>44 percent<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of the Latino vote in the previous midterm election.<\/p>\n<p>In the national elections in 2020 and off-year 2021 elections in Virginia, billionaire gun\u00a0control backer and former failed presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg used his gun\u00a0control groups Everytown for Gun\u00a0Safety and Moms Demand Action and spent more than\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/bloomberg-spent-1-billion-ads-races-losses-2020-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$1 billion<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0dollars to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/bloomberg-looks-to-buy-more-seats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>swing legislative seats<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0at the state and federal level. He came up short as voters roundly rejected him and his policies to restrict the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Right of All<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The same NSSF survey data that showed a 49 percent increase in Hispanic-American gun\u00a0owners between 2019 and 2020 also revealed\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssf-retail-surveys-show-3-2-million-estimated-first-time-gun-buyers-in-first-half-of-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">40 percent<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of all firearm purchases went to first-time buyers. With more than 8.4 million first-time owners in 2020 combined with more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thereload.com\/newsletter-millions-more-americans-have-become-gun-owners-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>3.2 million<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in the first six months of 2021, the portion of Americans who previously may have supported gun\u00a0control or refused to buy a gun\u00a0became so moved by the crime surge and violence that they witnessed, no matter what their race or politics before, and went to the community firearm retailer and walked out with a new purchase.<\/p>\n<p>CBS News reported on P.J. Gomez, a law student at University of California Berkeley \u2013 hardly a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=ale&amp;ti=11145&amp;pri=26973&amp;pw=275597&amp;mi=20105&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bastiongear.com%2F\" rel=\"ugc\">bastion<\/a>\u00a0of gun\u00a0rights supporters \u2013 who founded the Latino Rifle Association. The group has already added several hundred members. \u201cI don\u2019t believe self-defense\u2026 should be exclusive to people on the right politically,\u201d Gomez\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/black-latino-gun-owners-armed-cbsn-originals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>said<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cThe police and the government aren\u2019t taking care of me, so I have to do things on my own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That belief manifested itself in the historic number of new gun\u00a0owners in America, including large numbers of African-Americans, Asian-Americans and Hispanic-Americans. If law-abiding citizens of any race or gender continue to see elected officials fail to protect them and make their communities safer, they will continue to go out and legally purchase firearms.
