\u2018Free Speech Advocates\u2019 Panic Over Parents\u2019 Push for More Curriculum Transparency<\/a><\/p>\n

Teachers, unions and \u201cfree speech advocates\u201d argue that more school curriculum transparency would be equivalent to \u201ceducational gag orders,\u201d experts told NBC News.<\/p>\n

State lawmakers in at least 12 states across the U.S. have introduced legislation to promote more school transparency by requiring teachers to post educational materials online, NBC News reported. Conservatives see more transparency as a way to prevent controversial curricula such as race-based education, Critical Race Theory (CRT) and sexually graphic books.<\/p>\n

CRT holds that America is fundamentally racist, yet it teaches people to view every social interaction and person in terms of race. Its adherents pursue \u201cantiracism\u201d through the end of merit, objective truth and the adoption of race-based policies.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are going to disagree on a lot of these issues,\u201d Matt Beienburg, the Goldwater Institute\u2019s director of Education Policy, told NBC News. \u201cTransparency is something I think that at least allows for that conversation to know what is being taught. Everybody should be able to rally around the fact that we shouldn\u2019t be teaching something in secret.\u201d<\/p>\n

Public schools have become\u00a0battlegrounds for culture wars<\/a>\u00a0over mask rules, COVID-19 vaccinations, school reopenings,\u00a0CRT<\/a>\u00a0and remote learning. Parents have called on school boards across the country to allow them more of a say in what their children are being taught.<\/p>\n

In Virginia, Gov. Glenn Youngkin defeated Democrat Terry McAuliffe\u00a0with the help of\u00a0parents who were fed up<\/a>\u00a0with the current administration and the state\u2019s policies, and made it clear they wanted to see change in the state\u2019s education system.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

He promised to ban concepts like CRT and to put parents first. McAuliffe slipped out of favor when he claimed CRT was a \u201cracist dog whistle<\/a>\u201d and made the assertion that he doesn\u2019t think parents should be\u00a0telling schools<\/a>\u00a0what they should teach.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe reject the notion that parents shouldn\u2019t have a say in what their kids are learning in school,\u201d Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0in a Jan. 11 speech.<\/p>\n

Chris Rufo, journalist and anti-CRT proponent, has been critical of teachers unions who \u201cdon\u2019t want families to see what\u2019s happening in the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
