Bill Gates funnels $1 MILLION to push &#8216;math is racist&#8217; narrative<\/a><br \/>\n<em>With $1 million of support from the Gates Foundation, universities and local governments are bringing \u201canti-racism\u201d to mathematics.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The group says that a \u201cfocus on getting the \u2018right\u2019 answer\u201d and state standards directing classroom instruction represent \u201cwhite supremacy culture.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The group suggests implementing \u201cethnomathematics\u201d as an antidote.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With a $1 million check from the Gates Foundation, leading universities and local governments are building an effort to bring \u201canti-racism\u201d efforts to mathematics.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/equitablemath.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Pathway to Equitable Instruction<\/a>\u00a0exists to address \u201cbarriers to math equity\u201d by offering \u201cguidance and resources for educators to use now as they plan their curriculum, while also offering opportunities for ongoing self-reflection as they seek to develop an anti-racist math practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the group\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/equitablemath.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/Math-Equity-Collaborators-Bios.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">content developers<\/a>\u00a0are Ruth Basket, Mirna Maranda-Welsh, and Malane Morales-Van Hecke from the Los Angeles County Office of Education\u2019s Multilingual Academic Support Unit; David Chun, the Director of K-12 Mathematics at the Sacramento County Office of Education; and Mindy Shacklett, a Coordinator of Mathematics at the San Diego County Office of Education. Multiple professors from the University of California system and Loyola Marymount University also worked on the project.<\/p>\n<p>In its acknowledgments section \u2014 which lists the aforementioned universities and governments as \u201cdedicated partners\u201d \u2014 the project thanks the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for its \u201cgenerous financial support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gates Foundation senior communications officer Josie Duckett McSpadden confirmed to\u00a0<em>Campus Reform<\/em>\u00a0that the nonprofit gave $1,000,000\u202fto the group.<\/p>\n<p>One of the group\u2019s guides \u2014 entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/equitablemath.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/1_STRIDE1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dismantling Racism in Mathematics Instruction<\/a>\u201d \u2014 lists the \u201cfocus on getting the \u2018right\u2019 answer,\u201d the emphasis on \u201creal-world math,\u201d state standards directing classroom instruction, and the sequential teaching of skills as \u201cwhite supremacy culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, the guide endeavors to debunk several alleged signs of white supremacy in mathematics. For instance, the notion that \u201c\u2018good\u2019 math teaching is considered an antidote for mathematical inequity\u201d among minority students is decried on the grounds that \u201ceither\/or thinking\u201d \u201callows the defensiveness of Western mathematics to prevail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addressing the belief that state standards ought to direct classroom instruction, the guide suggests that teachers \u201cunpack how the standards uphold white supremacy culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As an antidote to white supremacy culture, the guide suggests centering the classroom upon \u201cethnomathematics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students may, for example, \u201crecognize the ways that communities of color engage in mathematics and problem solving in their everyday lives\u201d or \u201cchallenge the ways that math is used to uphold capitalist, imperialist, and racist views.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teachers are likewise encouraged to \u201cintentionally include mathematicians of color\u201d in their instruction and \u201cacknowledge the mathematical knowledge of students of color, even if it shows up unconventionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another guide \u2014 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/equitablemath.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/5_STRIDE5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustaining Equitable Practice<\/a>\u201d \u2014 asserts that \u201cthe relationship between instructional coach and teacher can be complicated and nuanced given the intersectionality of both participants\u2019 identities.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Promoting BS like this is exactly part and parcel of the continued push to &#8216;dumb down&#8217; the populace, since ignorant people are so much easier to control. 2+2=5?
