{"id":79207,"date":"2022-03-26T17:52:42","date_gmt":"2022-03-26T22:52:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=79207"},"modified":"2022-03-26T17:54:37","modified_gmt":"2022-03-26T22:54:37","slug":"79207","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=79207","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First-time &#8216;<em>Pandemic Gun Buyers&#8217;\u2122<\/em> support gun rights just as much, <strong><em>if not more<\/em> <\/strong>than pre-pandemic gun owners<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.norc.org\/NewsEventsPublications\/PressReleases\/Pages\/one-in-five-american-households-purchased-a-gun-during-the-pandemic.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One in Five American Households Purchased a Gun During the Pandemic<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Survey: First-time gun purchasers during the pandemic were more likely to be younger and People of Color, compared to pre-pandemic U.S. gun owners, but they share similar views on gun control.<\/p>\n<p>CHICAGO, March 24, 2022 \u2013 <strong>Eighteen percent of U.S. households purchased a gun since the start of the pandemic (March 2020\u2013March 2022), according to new survey data from NORC at the University of Chicago, increasing the percentage of U.S. adults living in a household with a gun to 46%. Over this period, one in 20 adults in America (5%) purchased a gun for the first time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the FBI, an average of 13 million guns were sold legally in the U.S. each year between 2010 and 2019, increasing to about 20 million annual gun sales in both 2020 and 2021.<\/p>\n<p>[large images linked]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.norc.org\/PublishingImages\/Press%20Releases\/Pandemic%20Gun%20Buyers%20Compared%20to%20Pre-Pandemic%20Gun%20Owners%20by%20Select%20Characteristics.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.norc.org\/PublishingImages\/Press%20Releases\/Pandemic%20Gun%20Buyers%20Compared%20to%20Pre-Pandemic%20Gun%20Owners%20by%20Select%20Characteristics.png\" alt=\"Pandemic Gun Buyers Compared to Pre-Pandemic Gun Owners by Select Characteristics\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncreasing gun sales during the pandemic were driven in nearly equal parts by people purchasing a gun for the first time and existing gun owners purchasing additional firearms,\u201d said John Roman of NORC at the University of Chicago. \u201cNew gun owners during the pandemic were much more likely to be younger and People of Color compared to pre-pandemic gun owners in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite demographic differences between first-time and pre-pandemic U.S. gun owners, NORC\u2019s experts found that the two groups have similar views on gun-control policies. Both first-time and pre-pandemic U.S. gun owners support more permissive gun policies than non-gun owners. These included policies such as expanding concealed carry, shortening waiting periods before gun purchases, and allowing teachers and school officials to carry guns in schools.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/preview.redd.it\/rc6rzep4kkp81.png?width=960&amp;crop=smart&amp;auto=webp&amp;s=1bb7d985d4e1efedce5814b3f7dd12e3749024ac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.norc.org\/PublishingImages\/Press%20Releases\/Support%20for%20Permissive%20Gun%20Policies%20by%20Timing%20of%20Gun%20Ownership.png\" alt=\"Support for Permissive Gun Policies\" width=\"451\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst-time gun buyers\u2019 attitudes toward gun control look remarkably similar to those of the pre-pandemic U.S. gun owner,\u201d said John Roman. &#8220;Whether they bought a gun because of existing beliefs about gun control\u2014or owning a gun changed their policy views\u2014is unknown, but it is notable that the policy positions of new gun owners are so different from non-gun owners.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong>Methodology<\/strong><br \/>\nThe self-funded poll was conducted March 3\u20137, 2022, during a monthly Omnibus survey. It included 1,106 interviews with a nationally representative sample (margin of error +\/- 3.85 percent) of adult Americans age 18+ using the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amerispeak.norc.org\/Pages\/default.aspx\">AmeriSpeak\u00ae<\/a>\u00a0Panel.
