Kemp’s pro-gun retort to challenger Perdue is glorious<\/a><\/p>\n

Gov. Brian Kemp has signed constitutional carry into law. It\u2019s now in effect here in the state of Georgia, which means your\u2019s truly doesn\u2019t need a permit anymore unless I leave the state and want reciprocity.<\/p>\n

And since the two states I generally travel to are also constitutional carry states\u2026<\/p>\n

Anyway, I appreciate what Kemp did, but the truth is that we\u2019d have liked to have seen it happen much sooner. I think everyone feels that way.<\/p>\n

Yet, political realities are what they are.<\/p>\n

Despite that, it\u2019s a point of contention in the GOP primary where the governor\u2019s challenger, former U.S. Senator David Perdue has\u00a0taken issue with it not being done earlier<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s great,\u201d said David Perdue.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s too bad it took four years to get it done and it\u2019s too bad it took me getting in the race for them to get any energy to get that done, but I\u2019m glad it\u2019s getting done.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Now, understand that it would have passed last year were it not for House Speaker David Ralston deciding the bill shouldn\u2019t advance because of the mass shooting in Atlanta. I don\u2019t really see how you can put that on Kemp.<\/p>\n

However, Kemp had a response to Perdue\u2019s criticism.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you had to get the votes in the legislature,\u201d Gov. Kemp explained.\u00a0 \u201cBut look, he was in the United States Senate for six years.\u00a0 I don\u2019t ever remember him pushing this bill up there.\u00a0 It\u2019d be great if they did that at the federal level.\u00a0 We wouldn\u2019t have to do it with all the states.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

OK, I don\u2019t care who you are, that\u2019s amazing.<\/p>\n

Look, even though I live in Georgia, I don\u2019t have a dog in this particular fight. I\u2019m skeptical of Perdue\u2019s claims that he\u2019s the only one who can beat Stacey Abrams when he couldn\u2019t even beat career candidate Jon Ossoff while Kemp actually\u00a0did\u00a0beat Abrams.<\/p>\n

Yet either is preferable over an anti-gun Abrams.<\/p>\n

However, Perdue\u2019s attacks on Kemp for not doing something earlier seem more than a little bizarre considering Kemp actually got it done.<\/p>\n

The governor is also right about how great it would be to have a law like this at the federal level. It would be absolutely amazing. Then even California and New Jersey residents could enjoy the benefits of constitutional carry.<\/p>\n

Look, I\u2019m not doubting both of these two men support the Second Amendment. I also know that it\u2019s a primary and they\u2019re going to fight it out.<\/p>\n

However, I can\u2019t help but feel like Perdue is counting on Georgia gun rights advocates to buy into this idea that Kemp could have just snapped his fingers at any time and made constitutional carry happen. It\u2019s like he\u2019s counting on the ignorance of a segment of the base he\u2019s desperately courting, and I don\u2019t like that at all.<\/p>\n

Yet the governor flipped the script on him in a way that works for me.<\/p>\n

Frankly, I can\u2019t find Perdue\u00a0 sponsoring any pro-gun legislation<\/a>\u00a0during his time in the Senate. As such, he probably needs to sit the gun arguments out<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
