{"id":80491,"date":"2022-04-28T09:05:15","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T14:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=80491"},"modified":"2022-04-28T09:05:15","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T14:05:15","slug":"80491","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesfortis.com\/?p=80491","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/aV2uq#selection-483.0-483.66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California Gun-Grabbers Are Scapegoating Lawful Gun Owners (Again)<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>As gun-controllers exploit a California mass shooting, even mainstream media are expressing skepticism.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the recent shootout in Sacramento \u2014 now thought to be a gang battle involving at least five shooters \u2014 gun-control zealots are determined to take away the people\u2019s rights and give them more of what doesn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n<p>California has more gun laws than any other, yet state lawmakers are still <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/local\/article260068725.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">exploring new ways<\/a>\u00a0to disarm peaceable residents and leave them at the mercy of criminals. Meanwhile, President Biden has already taken advantage of the tragedy,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/local\/article260082345.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">calling on Congress<\/a>\u00a0to pass the same laws that didn\u2019t stop the carnage in California.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>Surprisingly, even the mainstream press, which tends to be favorable toward gun control, has shown skepticism.<\/div>\n<div>It was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.ncadvertiser.com\/news\/article\/California-lawmakers-target-gunmakers-ghost-guns-17091436.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">reported on April 19<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cseveral bills\u201d to further restrict guns in California have \u201cgained momentum from recent mass shootings,\u201d especially the April 3 Sacramento massacre. Predictably, many of these bills have no connection to that incident. Instead, they\u2019re items from the wish list of anti-gun groups: enabling lawsuits against gun manufacturers, further burdening lawful firearm dealers, restricting gun marketing, and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.realclearpolicy.com\/articles\/2021\/02\/04\/gun_control_activists_are_targeting_the_right_to_self-sufficiency_659057.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">targeting ghost guns<\/a>.\u201d \u00a0Less predictably, NPR, notorious for left-wing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/12\/14\/1063766485\/their-lives-were-changed-by-gun-violence-and-now-theyre-running-for-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">anti-gun bias<\/a>, would question the value of passing more gun-control laws in California.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Following the Sacramento massacre, NPR reported on \u201cat least 24 more bills\u201d to restrict guns in California. The piece had a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/04\/05\/1091017539\/sacramento-shooting-california-gun-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">borderline-snarky headline<\/a>\u00a0that a gun-rights advocate could have written: \u201cAfter the Sacramento shooting, the state with the most gun laws may soon get more.\u201d In many ways, the piece itself was typical NPR. But it also contained flashes of realism.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cEven when states make it harder to get guns, gun violence still occurs all too often,\u201d reporter Laurel Wamsley noted. \u201cIn a state that already has more gun restrictions than anywhere else in the U.S., how much further can the law go?\u201d As Wamsley pointed out, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.ppic.org\/publication\/crime-trends-in-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">violence-plagued state<\/a>\u00a0already gets\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/giffords.org\/lawcenter\/resources\/scorecard\/?scorecard=CA%23every-state-ranked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">Giffords\u2019s highest rating<\/a>\u00a0for gun control.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>NPR wasn\u2019t alone in raising questions. Amazingly, the\u00a0<em>Trace<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 an outlet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Trace_(website)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">dedicated to gun-control advocacy<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 seemed skeptical about the California push. Its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.thetrace.org\/newsletter\/eighteen-people-shot-in-sacramento\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">April 4 Daily Bulletin<\/a>\u00a0was headlined by the Sacramento shooting. It concluded, as the bulletin often does, with a statistic: \u201c107 \u2014 the number of gun control laws on the books in California, more than any other state.\u201d The same day, the\u00a0<em>Trace<\/em>\u00a0reported that the Sacramento shooting \u201clikely involved\u201d an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.thetrace.org\/2022\/04\/sacramento-mass-shooting-auto-sear-machine-gun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">already-illegal<\/a> gun modification.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>An even clearer note of skepticism came from\u00a0<em>Politico<\/em>, reporting on President Biden\u2019s reaction to the Sacramento shootout.<\/div>\n<div>In his gun-grabbing response \u2014 basically a rehash of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/thereload.com\/biden-calls-for-more-gun-control-in-first-state-of-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">old material<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 Biden called on Congress to \u201cban ghost guns,\u201d \u201crequire background checks for all gun sales,\u201d \u201cban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines,\u201d and \u201crepeal gun manufacturers\u2019 immunity from liability.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>Here, Biden was making a transparent attempt to take advantage of a tragedy to push his own agenda. None of the steps he proposed would have stopped the Sacramento shooting; indeed, several of them had already been taken by California before the shooting occurred.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em>Politico<\/em>, which is not exactly known for having a conservative bent, saw fit to say as much. After listing Biden\u2019s proposed responses to the violence in Sacramento,\u00a0<em>Politico<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/california-playbook\/2022\/04\/04\/after-sacramento-shooting-biden-says-we-must-act-00022645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">California Playbook newsletter noted<\/a>\u00a0that the state \u201cfar outstrips any other state\u201d in gun-control restrictions and \u201calready bans assault weapons, high-capacity magazines and requires background checks for sales.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Different factors could explain these unusual moments of honesty from the media.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Ahead of the midterm elections, it could be that the mainstream Left is eager to adopt a \u201cmoderate\u201d image, and is thus making a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/593735-orourke-on-past-remarks-about-taking-away-guns-im-not-interested-in-taking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">tactical retreat<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/gun-control-is-a-political-loser-but-gun-grabbers-just-cant-help-themselves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">increasingly unpopular<\/a>\u00a0gun-control proposals that cause discomfort\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/articles\/the-tide-is-turning-on-gun-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">even among Democrats.<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It could also be that some reporters are just getting tired of the way in which mass shootings are constantly and predictably politicized. Even gun-control supporters might get sick of repeating the same calls to action, by the same politicians, over and over again.<\/div>\n<div>Whatever the reason, it\u2019s good to see a bit of common sense cut through the mainstream media\u2019s echo chamber. More gun control won\u2019t save California from a crisis that has seen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.ppic.org\/blog\/whos-leaving-california-and-whos-moving-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">residents flee the state<\/a>\u00a0and Los Angeles be compared to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.police1.com\/patrol-issues\/articles\/its-like-purge-la-police-union-head-warns-tourists-away-from-city-C9VvkImzHqVZB5aS\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">horror film<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Of course, recognizing as much is not enough. Californians, and all Americans, need to hear the full truth: Gun control isn\u2019t just ineffective, it\u2019s deeply immoral. Armed self-defense is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1172255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">natural right<\/a>, not a government-granted privilege. Gun control disarms peaceable citizens and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/california-releases-violent-criminals-from-its-jails-then-blames-guns-for-their-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">doesn\u2019t stop criminals<\/a>. And the most important thing government can do for our safety is to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/aV2uq\/https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/indiana-joins-the-club-governor-holcomb-signs-constitutional-carry-into-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">stay out of the way<\/a>\u00a0of our right to self-defense<em>.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>You won\u2019t hear\u00a0<em>those<\/em>\u00a0truths from NPR or\u00a0<em>Politico<\/em>.
