Laura Kelly\u2019s veto on The Fairness in Women\u2019s Sports Act, a bill that would ban biological male athletes from competing in women\u2019s school sports across the state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also known as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kslegislature.org\/li\/b2021_22\/measures\/documents\/summary_sb_160_2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SB 160,<\/a>\u00a0the legislation \u201crequires interscholastic, intercollegiate, intramural, or club athletic teams or sports that are sponsored by public educational institutions\u201d to\u00a0ban male students from joining teams or sports \u201cdesignated for females.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It does not ban female athletes or girls from participating in men\u2019s or boys\u2019 sports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The bill was introduced by Republicans in February 2021 and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/kansas-governor-vetoes-transgender-sports-ban-bill_4420329.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vetoed by Kelly on April 15.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, the Senate voted 28\u201310 on Monday to override the governor\u2019s veto, and it now heads to the House for lawmakers to vote to sustain or override the veto.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Republican sponsors of the bill say it is needed to create fairness and protect\u00a0the integrity of female sports and opportunities for girls to gain college athletic scholarships.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If the bill is violated, it allows any student\u00a0deprived of an athletic opportunity or who suffers direct or indirect harm to\u00a0file a civil suit and seek relief in the form of monetary damages.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMen should not be competing in women\u2019s sports,\u201d Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said\u00a0after the veto earlier this month. \u201cGovernor Kelly today vetoed (for the second time) a bill to implement that commonsense principle. I would have signed the bill into law.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Lawsuits<\/h2>\n<p>But critics, including the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas, say\u00a0the legislation is\u00a0prejudiced and harmful and targets trans children in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill embodied the worst of cynical politics; it was a solution in search of a problem, coldly trading the safety of Kansas children for cheap political points,\u201d ACLU of Kansas Executive Director Micah Kubic said. \u201cIt was legalized bullying in the name of identity politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At least 15 states have enacted similar bills on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-transgender\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transgender<\/a>\u00a0athletes, which has prompted lawsuits in\u00a0Tennessee and Florida.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Senate also voted on Monday to override the veto on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kslegislature.org\/li\/b2021_22\/measures\/documents\/summary_sb_58_2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cParents\u2019 Bill of Rights,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0also known as SB 58, in a 27\u201312 vote.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That bill\u00a0enumerates 12 rights reserved by the state for parents with regards to their child, including the right to \u201cbe informed of\u00a0and inspect any materials, activities, and curriculum provided to the child,\u201d and \u201cobject to\u00a0any learning material or activity\u201d that they believe may harm their child due to the \u201cparent\u2019s beliefs, values, or principles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican state Sen. Renee Erickson told\u00a0Washington-based\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/government\/state-houses\/kansas-state-senate-overrides-vetos-parental-rights-and-womens-sports-bills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Just the News<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday that the bills are part of a \u201cbigger fight\u201d against Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that they will use any means at their disposal to further their ideology and their agenda. But we\u2019re on to them; parents are on to them,\u201d she said, adding, \u201cIf anything positive happened from the pandemic, it\u2019s [that] parents woke up, and they\u2019re seeing what\u2019s going on. And they don\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With regards to\u00a0SB 160,\u00a0Erickson said the\u00a0legislation will \u201censure that Kansas girls and women have a level playing field when it comes to sports competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The SB 58 legislation focuses on \u201creaffirming that parents are the most important educator in their child\u2019s lives and affirming the right that they have to know what is being taught in schools,\u201d Erickson said.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kansas Senate Overrides Governor\u2019s Veto On Transgender Sports Ban Bill The Kansas Senate on Monday voted to override Gov.
