Now the \u201cyoung progressive elite\u201d want the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bariweiss.substack.com\/p\/we-arent-raising-adults-we-are-breeding\">grownups to protect them<\/a>\u00a0from emotional and psychological harm, writes William Deresiewicz on Bari Weiss\u2019s Common Sense Substack.<\/p>\n<p>Not much has changed since he wrote\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Excellent-Sheep-Miseducation-American-Meaningful\/dp\/1476702721\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3TSVMDR4BH1V8&amp;keywords=excellent+sheep+by+william+deresiewicz&amp;qid=1653694393&amp;s=books&amp;sprefix=Excellent+Sheep%2Cstripbooks%2C205&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of America\u2019s Elite<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in 2013, he writes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are back to\u00a0<em>in loco parentis<\/em>, in fact if not in law. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">College is now regarded as the last stage of childhood, not the first of adulthood<\/span>. . . . The nature of woke protests, the absence of Covid and other protests, the whole phenomenon of excellent sheephood: all of them speak to the central dilemma of contemporary youth, which is that society has not given them any way to grow up \u2014 not financially, not psychologically, not morally.<\/p>\n<p>. . . The attributes of adulthood \u2014 responsibility, maturity, self-sacrifice, self-control \u2014 are no longer valued, and frequently no longer modeled. So children are stuck: they want to be adults, but they don\u2019t know how.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBeware of prepackaged rebellions,\u201d he tells the Class of 2022. \u201cThat protest march that you\u2019re about to join may be a herd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Becoming an independent person isn\u2019t easy, writes Deresiewicz. \u201cChildhood is over. Dare to grow up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stanford University (motto: \u201cLet the winds of freedom blow.\u201d)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/restoring-america\/faith-freedom-self-reliance\/at-stanford-the-new-applied-science-is-social-engineering\">doesn\u2019t want to let students grow up<\/a>, writes Bill Evers of the Independent Institute in the\u00a0<em>Washington Examiner.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Office of Student Affairs, which had fewer than 50 employees just three decades ago, now employs more than 400 administrators who micromanage students and infantilize adults who pay for an education at Stanford.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Under the\u00a0<a class=\"Link \" href=\"https:\/\/admission.stanford.edu\/student\/housing\/index.html#:~:text=All%20first%2Dyear%20students%20are,their%20four%20years%20with%20us.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ResX<\/a>\u00a0plan, students are assigned to a campus \u201cneighborhood\u201d for their undergraduate careers, Evers writes.\u00a0 They will find\u00a0ethnic-themed dorms for the \u201cBlack Diaspora\u201d and \u201cChicanx\/Latinx\u201d students to apartment buildings promoting \u201cthe\u00a0<a class=\"Link \" href=\"https:\/\/resed.stanford.edu\/neighborhoods\/theme-housing\/university-theme-houses\/academic-theme-houses\/equity-access-society\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDEAL<\/a>\u00a0(Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access in a Learning community).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students\u2019\u00a0<a class=\"Link \" href=\"https:\/\/studentaffairs.stanford.edu\/student-alcohol-and-other-drugs-policy\">social life is regulated<\/a>: Students must register any party they host, he writes. Get-togethers during \u201cdead weeks\u201d before finals are banned, as is hard liquor and drinking games, even for students 21 and older.<\/p>\n<p>These measures \u201chave drawn\u00a0<a class=\"Link \" href=\"https:\/\/stanforddaily.com\/2021\/11\/29\/peoples-board-stanford-students-speak-out-against-university-reforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">widespread condemnation<\/a>\u00a0from students, including a\u00a0<a class=\"Link \" href=\"https:\/\/stanforddaily.com\/2021\/12\/01\/from-the-community-an-open-letter-to-the-stanford-administration-concerning-alcohol-culture-on-campus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">student-led health and safety initiative<\/a>\u00a0that provides snacks and water at parties and walks students home on the weekends,\u201d Evers writes. \u201cThese students say that the rule changes have spurred an increase in binge drinking.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Excellent lambs In the 1960s, campus protesters rejected adult authority, writes William Deresiewicz.
