Anti-gun activists react to Senate gun control deal<\/a><\/p>\n

For the first time since 1994, it looks like we\u2019re going to get gun control. In the wake of Buffalo, Uvalde, Tulsa, and\u00a0Smithsburg<\/a>, it was probably too much to hope that there wouldn\u2019t be anything at all.<\/p>\n

On Sunday,\u00a0as Cam noted<\/a>, a bipartisan committee announced they had reached a deal.<\/p>\n

Of course,\u00a0some folks have feelings about it<\/a>.<\/p>\n

US campaigners have welcomed a potential cross-party deal on gun safety reforms but stressed the proposals do not go far enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is progress even if small,\u201d said David Hogg, a survivor of the 2018 Parkland school shooting in Florida.<\/p>\n

Ex-lawmaker Gabrielle Giffords, injured in a 2011 shooting in Arizona, said it was an \u201cimportant step forward\u201d.<\/p>\n

The plans include tougher checks for buyers under the age of 21 and cracking down on illegal gun purchases.<\/p>\n

They were announced by a cross-party group of US senators on Sunday. Crucially, the proposals are supported by 10 Republicans, meaning they have the numbers to be voted into law.<\/p>\n

President Joe Biden also said the plans were \u201csteps in the right direction\u201d but they fell far short of what he and many Democrats have been calling for.\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a great first step but that\u2019s just what it is,\u201d Mr Hogg told the BBC. \u201cNo single policy is going to stop every shooting but this policy could stop the next Parkland and that\u2019s a good step.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Except, the measures reported that are most likely to prevent the next Parkland have absolutely nothing to do with gun control.<\/p>\n

Increased effort to address mental health and school security will do far, far more than including more information in the background check process would.<\/p>\n

Now, to be fair, this could be a whole lot worse.<\/p>\n

For most of us, this isn\u2019t likely to create any kind of an issue and we\u2019ll keep going about our lives like we always have. Part of the deal apparently calls for encouraging states to pass red flag laws, but since they can\u2019t actually make them, I think it\u2019s unlikely we\u2019ll see too many take advantage of such \u201cencouragement.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, it\u2019s also clear that Democrats won\u2019t be satisfied by this, either.<\/p>\n

Sure, they reached a deal here, but it\u2019s far from what they want and they don\u2019t know how to accept that. When these measures fail to stop the next shooting, the 10 Republicans who backed this can expect to hear all about how they didn\u2019t go far enough and it\u2019s still all their fault.<\/p>\n

I say this because much of this fails to actually address the root of mass shootings. In fact, it fails to even look for the root of mass shootings. It\u2019s not guns, for crying out loud.<\/p>\n

Yet something to think about is that now the pressure to accept more gun control will be greatest since these Republicans have signaled they\u2019re willing to budge. They\u2019re the ones who are going to be targeted to budge yet again.<\/p>\n

This is far from over.<\/p>\n

Democrats won\u2019t be satisfied with what they\u2019ve gotten and they\u00a0will<\/em>\u00a0begin pressing for all these new regulations they want in the very near future. What just happened won\u2019t even be acknowledged or, if it is, it\u2019ll be labeled too little to make a difference.<\/p>\n
